First Generation is a feature that spotlights students that will be the first in the family to attend and graduate from college or a staff member who was the first in the family to do so. We hope this segment inspires others and that it offers support to all those around us who are or will be first generation!
Kristal Sanchez-Rodriguez
is spotlighted this month!
What kind of student were you in middle school? How about now that you are in high school?
When I was in middle school I would describe myself as very on top of things, with a lot of motivation but also with a lot of stress and pressure. Now I would say that while I have less motivation at times I still always do what I'm supposed to do and with less stress because I started to focus on not stressing myself out and taking breaks.
Your older sister graduated from college. You will follow in her footsteps and also be part of a first generation in your family to do the same. How did her graduating inspire you? What is it that you would like to major in and ultimately pursue as a career path?
My sister graduating inspired me to always find a way and keep going, and that even if there are obstacles, if you really want something you have to keep going. I have a broad idea of what I want to major in, I definitely know I want to do some form of engineering, something like biochemical engineering.
Did you feel added pressure being part of a first generation in your family to attend/ graduate from college? Explain?
I do feel added pressure of being first generation in my family to attend college and graduate. A lot of the pressure is a result of wanting to make my family proud but also because of my sense of achievement. Additionally, I understand how important it is to go to college so you can get ahead and find a job that you enjoy but also provides.
When you face obstacles or challenges, how do you overcome them?
I usually just tackle them straight on, avoiding them just makes them worse. I take my time to figure out the issue and come up with the best solution that would benefit me.
Who are some people who have championed you throughout your life? Who inspires you to achieve/ to soar?
I would say my parents have inspired me to achieve, they have constantly worked hard throughout their lives to give my siblings and I a better opportunity in getting ahead which is why it is so important for me to go and graduate college.
What piece of advice or words of wisdom do you have to WYWLA students who will be the first in their family to attend/ graduate from college?
My best piece of advice for students who are first generations would be keep going and don't stress. Always try your best because that is what matters, if you know you really tried then everything you do will reflect that. And even if you don´t do well just keep going and trying, don't get stuck because of one thing. It's really not worth it. Lastly, always be curious,. That curiosity will help you in the long run.
