First Generation is a feature that spotlights students that will be the first in the family to attend and graduate from college or a staff member who was the first in the family to do so. We hope this segment inspires others and that it offers support to all those around us who are or will be first generation!
Dulce Urioso-Rodriguez
is spotlighted this month!
Tell us about growing up being the first child in your family to be able to go to college.
Growing up there has always been some sort of pressure on me from my parents. They have always expected me to excel in school and be able to achieve a lot more academically than they were able to. The expectations for me to go to college and get a degree have always been present in my life.
Do you feel added pressure /responsibility being the first in your family to attend/ graduate from college? Explain?
Yes because I feel that because I have the opportunity and my parents didn't, I need to go to college. Even though my dad says that some jobs still pay well without college education I know it will make him happy if he sees me succeed in getting a degree. By actually having the opportunity I constantly feel the need to make both my parents proud.
What are you like as a student at WYWLA? Tell us about your favorite class?
I would say I am a pretty good student. I always like to have good grades especially if it means I need to work hard for them. My favorite class is math because even though it is hard I learn fast sometimes and its a class in which I know I can master the standards with practice and patience for myself.
What do you like best about WYWLA?
I like how most of our classes push us enough for success but they don't completely overwhelm us. We are usually always trying to get set up for success. As well as how easy it is to get extra help if needed and how we have resources to use on our own that the teachers give us.
Who are 1-2 people who champion you at WYWLA?
At WYWLA Mrs. Malinda always supports me and encourages me to try my best. Her advice is always great and she's someone I know I can always rely on for any help I need in math or in general. As well as Kaimy, she is always there to help me in anything I need help with. She encourages me to excel in school and always try my best.
What are you involved in at WYWLA? In your community?
In my community I regularly volunteer at my church and other community places in which we offer people help and support and child care.
What do you want to accomplish in the future?
In the future I want to get a degree in engineering. I like STEM based careers a lot and the options that STEM careers offer. I want a career focused on math and science so I feel like engineering is a good fit for me.
