WYWLA CLASS OF 2024
What year did you graduate from WYWLA?
I graduated in 2024.
How long were you at WYWLA?
I was at WYWLA for 7 years (6th - 12th grades).
Why did you choose WYWLA? What were some things you had in mind to get out of WYWLA? Did you? Who were your biggest influences at WYWLA?
Initially, I felt nervous about choosing WYWLA. The idea of being surrounded by all girls and wearing a uniform didn't appeal to me. However, after touring the school and gazing at the food in the dining hall, I started to reconsider. Deep down, I recognized it would be a wise long-term choice due to the early college experience and the chance to grow intellectually among a diverse group of girls. My biggest influences at WYWLA were my friends—my sisters. We experienced everything together, and it’s incredible to reflect on our journey, especially during the times we thought we would never make it to this point.
What are some of the biggest lessons you learned at WYWLA?
WYWLA instilled in me some of the most valuable lessons I carry with me today. Building supportive relationships, finding my independence, and embracing resilience were among the key lessons. The importance of connection and collaboration became clear to me through the development of supportive relationships. Each interaction taught me how to communicate effectively and enhanced my learning experience. The lesson of independence was quite significant, especially as a twin sister. I learned to take initiative in my own studies and personal growth, which encouraged me to think critically and make knowledgeable decisions without solely relying on others. Resilience, especially during challenging moments, became a noteworthy part of my character. I learned that setbacks are a part of life, and how we respond to them shapes who we become.
What were you involved in during your high school years? What staff members championed you while at WYWLA? How?
Throughout high school, I was actively involved in SGA, NHS, Track and Field, FBLA, and Junior Civitan. In SGA, I held the positions of student body president and vice president. In NHS, I served as parliamentarian, and in Track and Field, I was co-captain of the girls' sprint team. Outside of school, I participated in Girl Scouts, volunteered at Seasons Village, mentored for the North Carolina Business Committee of Education's annual competition "Ready, Set, App," and served on the Teen Advisory Council for the YMCA Lightning Y Achievers program.
Many staff members played a vital role in my development as a student, but a few who stand out include Mrs. Stearns, Mrs. di Carlo, Dr. Terry, Ms. Cuffee, Mrs. Solomon, and our principal Dr. Walker, along with assistant principal Mrs. Greene-Flowers. Mrs. Stearns pushed me to excel both academically and athletically, guiding me through track tryouts and meets while nurturing my determination. Mrs. di Carlo was a constant source of support throughout my high school experience; she made everything feel seamless and helped ease my stress. During the college application season, she stood by me, cheering me on and helping me reach my goals. Dr. Terry has been with me since middle school; attending her classes was always a highlight of my day. Her humor and encouragement sparked my creativity and deepened my understanding of the world around me. Ms. Cuffee, also a long-time supporter, felt like a second mom to me. She offered guidance when I faltered, ensuring I stayed on the right path while continually checking in on me throughout high school. Mrs. Solomon encouraged me to enhance my leadership skills, believing in me as I ran for student body president and helped improve our school environment for all students. Lastly, Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Greene-Flowers stood by me during both triumphs and challenges at SAU. They provided unwavering support, offered wise advice, and inspired me to strive for excellence and advocate for myself.
Approximately how many college credits did you earn through our partnership with St. Augustine’s University?
Through the partnership with St. Augustine's University, I earned about 60 credits.
Why did you choose Kinesiology as your major? What is your career goal?
I am majoring in Kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science. I have always loved all things medicine and sports, so this major was a natural choice. I am particularly interested in human health, wellness, and advocacy. After graduating, I hope to become a physical therapist or physician assistant. Ultimately, I'd like to open my own practice to ensure underserved communities receive the healthcare they deserve.
What advice would you offer to our 6th grade OWLS, 9th grade OWLS, and our senior OWLS?
To the 6th grade OWLs, I would advise you to stay curious and ask questions. This is the perfect time to make mistakes, learn valuable lessons, and discover who you are. For the 9th grade OWLs, even when things get tough, keep pushing through. Your hard work will pay off. Find your circle of girls, support each other, and share advice; every effort counts. And to the seniors—you're so close to the finish line! Remember what my track coaches always said: you have to sprint THROUGH the finish line—don’t slow down now! And most importantly, celebrate your achievements and look ahead to new opportunities!
What do you do in your spare time? What are you involved with now at college?
In my spare time, I spend time at the gym, hang out with friends, or participate in various clubs and organizations. Currently, I am involved with the NC A&T Red Cross Organization, the Student Health Advisory Council, NC A&T CHAARG, and all things related to the honors program. While I actively participate and advocate in most of these clubs, I also serve as the founding Vice President of NC A&T CHAARG, a club created to help girls at NC A&T feel comfortable at the gym and achieve their fitness goals.
What colleges did you apply to/get accepted? Why did you choose your university?
I applied to several universities, including Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, Princeton, UNC Charlotte, Meredith College, North Carolina Central University, Winston-Salem State University, East Carolina University, and my current school, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University—AGGIE PRIDE! I chose NCAT because of the drive of the students and the historical connection. The opportunities and resources available here empower students to thrive and step out of their comfort zones. Additionally, I felt a strong connection because they chose me; I applied for and was accepted into their full-ride Cheatham-White Scholarship Program. This scholarship allows me to enjoy the benefits of being both a student and a scholar, which is truly an honor.
How did high school prepare you for college?
High school prepared me for college in many valuable ways. Before even stepping on campus, I felt equipped with the maturity and knowledge needed to succeed as a college student. I learned how to self-advocate, ensuring that I can effectively seek help when needed. I also discovered the importance of building meaningful connections with faculty and staff, which has greatly benefited me here at NC A&T.
What is your impression of life at your university thus far? How does it feel to be a college student?
My impression of NC A&T is quite positive. Although I’ve had to do a lot of advocating for myself, I am grateful for the experience of personal growth and for being pushed out of my comfort zone. NCAT is much larger than WYWLA, and being on campus at first felt daunting. However, I am getting used to it and am open to all the opportunities and events available on campus.

Why did you choose WYWLA? What were some things you had in mind to get out of WYWLA? Did you? Who were your biggest influences at WYWLA?
In the beginning, it was my mom that chose WYWLA for my sister and I, but then I mentally chose WYWLA probably in the middle of 7th grade when I realized the diversity around me, the supportive teachers, and the opportunities the school had to offer. During my time at WYWLA I knew I wanted to obtain leadership roles, unique experiences, and valuable friendships. My biggest influences at WYWLA were my friends and teachers.
What are some of the biggest lessons you learned at WYWLA?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned at WYWLA is to surround yourself with people who will influence you to do the right things and make the right choices, because whether you realize it or not, who you associate yourself with and who you spend the most time around play an important role in who you are becoming. Another is to always try to improve different parts of yourself and become self aware in who you are and what you believe in. During your middle and highschool years, it’s important to discover who you are. This means developing your own morals, building confidence, shaping your character, learning how to treat others while also teaching others how to treat you. It also involves stepping out of your comfort zone, developing a work ethic, and forming meaningful relationships. Although it can be challenging at times, you’ll thank yourself in the long run because you will literally become unstoppable, find peace within yourself and you’ll be prepared for whatever life throws your way.

What colleges did you apply to/get accepted? Why did you choose your university?
I applied to UNC Charlotte, East Carolina University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina A&T University, Winston-Salem State University, and UNC Pembroke. I chose the illustrious North Carolina Central University because that’s where I saw opportunity, especially for my major and it felt like somewhere I could grow.
