First Generation is a feature that spotlights students that will be the first in the family to attend and graduate from college or a staff member who was the first in the family to do so. FEBRUARY FIRST GENERATION
What brought you to WYWLA? How did you feel when you were accepted?
What brought me to WYWLA was the opportunity to gain college credits before graduating as well as the friendly people here. When I was accepted into this school I was extremely happy because I felt as though this school would give me a good boost towards my future.
How would you describe yourself as a student in middle school?
I would describe myself as a smart and outgoing student in middle school. I hung out with friends a lot and really did my best in school. I continue to do the same today!
Do you feel added pressure being part of a first generation in your family to attend/ graduate from college? Explain? Any struggles you’ve encountered?
I feel like there is some added pressure in being the first in my family to attend college. I say this because due to none of my family attending college, they have a lack of information relating to the topic, and it is more pressure on me to find out information about it and do a lot of research about colleges and how they work.
What colleges have you thought about possibly attending/graduating from?
I have thought about attending Campbell University, and maybe NC State.
Who currently forms your support system?
My parents are definitely a huge support system for me when it comes to making decisions about my future and really anything I do in my life. They truly help me have the confidence to strive to achieve any goal I may have.
Have you given thought to what you’d like to study and become professionally after you graduate from college?
I would like to study anything relating to health science or child development because after I graduate from college I would like to go to a medical school and become an OBGYN.
What will it mean to your family when you graduate from college?
It will mean a lot to them. I know that they will be very proud of me and very happy for me, and will continue to support me even outside of college when I am building my career.
When you face obstacles or challenges now, how do you overcome them?
I normally take a minute to myself to really think, reflect on the obstacle and use that time to decide how I am going to go about solving it. I also may go to my parents or others for advice.
Who are some people who have championed you throughout your life? Who motivates and believes in you at WYWLA? Who inspires you to achieve/ to soar?
My family has definitely supported me throughout my life from the little things to the big things. Someone at WYWLA that believes in me is Mr. diCarlo. He is always willing to talk with me about college and he seems to really care about my future. I inspire myself to achieve because I want to push myself to have a bright and successful future.
What piece of advice or words of wisdom do you have to WYWLA students who will be the first in their family to attend/ graduate from college?
I would say that talking to your teachers definitely helps a ton, because they have been to college so they know a lot of information! Talking to Mrs. di Carlo would be a big help as well! You can always take the information provided to you and have a conversation with your parents about it, so that way you all are on the same page and they know how to support you best.
