Love for Enemies
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
When Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'...But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven...He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous...If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?...Are not even the tax collectors doing that?...And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others?...Do not even pagans do that?...Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect...And Teachings like Trusting in the LORD means trying to do what the LORD says...And in trying to do what our Father says, like loving one's enemies, is so difficult because He is Perfect...
So knowing that obeying Jesus and following Him is difficult, C. S. Lewis said, “I didn’t go to religion to make me happy...I always knew a bottle of Port would do that...If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.”...G. K. Chesterton said something similar, “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting...It has been found difficult; and left untried.”...
So following Jesus according to Lewis is not to make you comfortable and happy and it will be hard...Having faith and keeping the faith is found both difficult and hard...
