Matthew 19:4-6
Jesus Talks about Marriage
4 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' 5 and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
Genesis 1:27
God Makes Male and Female
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Genesis 2:24
God on Man and Woman
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Matthew 5:33-37
Oaths to God
33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
When Jesus talks about marriage, we see that it is a holy union between a man and a woman...We see that Scripture tells us that in the beginning the Creator made them male and female and for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh...So man and woman after they are married they are no longer two, but one...Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man not separate...Jesus tells us the importance of marriage, and the importance of love in a marriage...
And the husband and the wife cannot live alone and only sufficient on themselves...They have made an oath to God...So God is much included in the future of their relationship...
Many, if not most, want others included in their wedding...So they make vows that are made not only with God but also with families, friends, and their communities...If the two in marriage only considered themselves and nothing else, then they would not need God, the family or friends or their communities to be a part of their vows that they have spoken...But God and these other people are included and they have wanted and elected to share their vows to be made in front of God, their family, friends, and community...And thus, the married couple has shared their vows together with this group...The couple has made this sharing ceremony not only a union of two, but a community type togetherness ceremony...These newly married couples have pledged to God and their family, friends, and community until death will they part...So their oaths, their vows, that they have made to God, to each other, to family, to friends, to their community is a most holy and sacred thing that God has joined together and He wants no man to separate the two...Because when we have made an oath to God, Jesus tells us that we are to keep it and not break it...
Then as the family grows, we see even a more and different dynamic, with children...As we think about the marriage ceremony, we see a larger aspect of marriage and how it impacts many people...We also can see the importance of marriage in a much broader sense...
