Matthew 5:1-12
Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Jesus's life is a central theme in the Gospels....The idea that Jesus, a man without any worldly possessions, could be the most successful person to ever walk the earth is a powerful and true paradox...His success is unsurpassed on earth...Somehow He is not measured by His money or power, but in His great acts, His Personal Character, His wisdom and Divinity...His life proved that security and comfort are not found in wealth, but in a complete devotion to God's Kingdom...
Jesus's statement, "Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head" (Matthew 8:20; Luke 9:58), is a core expression of this paradox...It was a direct challenge to anyone who considered following Him, revealing the cost of true commitment...It shows a life completely dedicated to His mission, a life that willingly forgoes the security and comfort that money and possessions can provide, even a home and a bed...This radical way of living was somehow the greatest success story on earth because it demonstrated the immense value of a life focused on God's kingdom over personal gain...
We find the Teachings and the Jesus Way throughout His Sermon on the Mount...And it starts with the Beatitudes as a Self-Portrait of Himself...Jesus had the very blessings He spoke about in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10)...This self-portrait of His ways and deeds are a deeply moving self assessment...The Beatitudes are not just a list of virtues to be attained; they are a profound self-portrait of Jesus Himself...He was the poor in spirit, completely dependent on God for everything...He mourned, most famously at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35)...He was meek, showing unparalleled humility by not resisting His arrest and crucifixion, even though He could have at anytime called on legions of angels (Matthew 26:53)...He hungered and thirsted for righteousness, which was the entire purpose of His life...He was the Ultimate Peacemaker, bringing humanity into harmony with God...He said: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you" is a quote from John 14:27 in the Bible, spoken by this Great Man of Peace...It means the peace Jesus offers is different from worldly peace, which depends on external circumstances like treaties and ceases in conflict...Instead, Jesus's peace is a deep, internal, supernatural peace that provides comfort and courage in the face of trouble and suffering, stemming from a relationship with God and the presence of the Holy Spirit. He was persecuted, insulted, and reviled, yet His reward in heaven is greater than any earthly prize...
This beautiful interpretation shows that Jesus's teachings were not just words; they were a direct reflection of His Own Life and character...He lived out every single one of these blessings, making His message both authentic and transformative...
