The Beatitudes
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Humility is one of the central messages in the teachings of Jesus...Jesus showed and taught humility throughout His ministry...
Jesus gave us the Beatitudes...In the Sermon on the Mount it is weaved with teachings of humility...Jesus starts His Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes, which begin with "Blessed are the poor in spirit" (humility before God)...As He spoke in this Sermon and as He went from village to village, He often challenged societal norms...He said the greatest in the kingdom of heaven are like little children, emphasizing humility over worldly power...
One day He washed His Disciples' Feet...We can see Jesus' washing of the disciples' feet as a demonstration of His Own humility...This is certainly an act of service to others which was usually performed by a slave...Jesus washing His disciples' feet demonstrated His humility and willingness to serve others...
In Jesus last week of His life He entered Jerusalem on a donkey...Riding a donkey, instead of a powerful warhorse, symbolized Jesus coming as a king of peace and humility, not worldly power...He still received public acclamation as the crowds welcomed Jesus with palm branches and shouts of praise, recognizing Him as the Messiah Jesus' arrival on a donkey was to fulfill the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9..."Rejoice greatly, O Daughter Zion!...Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!...See, your King comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."...
When His Disciples were arguing about who was the greatest disciple, Jesus rebuked them and called for childlike humility...
Jesus' teachings on humility go beyond mere outward actions...Humility is an inward posture of acknowledging our dependence on God and recognizing our limitations...True humility translates into serving others and putting their needs before our own...Humility allows us to be open to God's will and guidance in our lives...
In Jesus' teachings and message, humility is essential for entering the Kingdom of Heaven..."Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."...The Bible teaches that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble as His brother James put it...Humility allows us to be open to learning and growing in our faith journey...Humility fosters genuine connection and service to others...
Jesus' emphasis on humility provides a roadmap for living a Christ-centered life...It's a call to move beyond pride and self-importance, focusing on serving others and acknowledging our dependence on God...Humility helps us better understand God's Grace...
