Matthew 5:1-12
Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
When one reads the Four Gospels, we read about Jesus’ ministry and about both His Actions and His Words...We quickly learn about how He wants to help the people who are marginalized in our societies...Jesus's ministry showed His unwavering compassion for the marginalized and His challenge to societal norms that perpetuated inequality...Jesus's actions and teachings consistently demonstrate His commitment to helping those in need, contradicting the notion that certain classes of people should be left to fend for themselves...Jesus's ministry was characterized by His radical inclusivity and His willingness to break down social barriers...He actively sought out and ministered to those who were ostracized and marginalized, challenging the prevailing attitudes of his time...And while those who did not want His help or want to believe in Him, He was always teaching about helping others in need...
Jesus frequently healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and those considered ritually unclean...These acts of healing were not only physical but also social, restoring individuals to their communities and demonstrating God's LOVE for those deemed unworthy by society...Jesus spent much of His time among the poor, the tax collectors, and the sinners...He challenged the self-righteousness of the religious leaders, emphasizing that God's LOVE extended to all, regardless of their social status or past sins...Jesus defied social conventions by touching lepers, dining with tax collectors, and speaking with Samaritan women...These actions challenged the rigid social hierarchies of His time and demonstrated His commitment to breaking down barriers between people...
Jesus's parables often highlighted the importance of compassion and mercy...The Parable of the Good Samaritan, for example, challenged the prevailing prejudices against Samaritans and emphasized the importance of showing compassion to those in need, even those considered enemies...
Jesus taught that true greatness was found in serving others, not in seeking power or prestige...He exemplified this principle by washing His disciples' feet, demonstrating that even the greatest among them should be servants to all...
The Beatitudes, at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, highlight those who are blessed by God, and many of those are the poor, those who mourn, and those who are persecuted...This shows that God’s heart is for those who are suffering and in need...
Jesus was born into humble circumstances...He lived a simple life and ultimately gave His life as a sacrifice for all humanity...This act of self-sacrifice demonstrates His profound LOVE for the world and His commitment to serving the needs of others...
Jesus's actions and teachings provide a powerful model for how we should treat those in need...He challenges us to break down social barriers, to show compassion to the marginalized, and to prioritize the needs of others above our own...He demonstrates that true faith is expressed through acts of love and service, and that God's LOVE extends to all, regardless of their circumstances...
