Marble Backsplash

IKEA HACK #2, DOMSJO Sink Backsplash

IKEA sells a beautiful farm sink for about $300, the DOMSJO. However, it's as deep as a standard counter, so typical backsplash options, where the backsplash mates with the countertop, won't work. Instead, we needed a backsplash which mated to the top of the sink. We went so far as to purchase tile, and laid out a pattern, however, a solid piece of Carrera Marble won out in the end. I used some sort construction adhesive to hold the marble against the wall, and then put nice bead of white silicone caulk between the backsplash and sink. We got lucky in one regard, since the thickness of the marble exactly matched the thickness of the solid oak backsplash at the oak butcher block counters.

Here's the beautiful DOMSJO farm style sink, on top of solid oak butcher block counters, with a Carrera marble backsplash.

And here's a closer view of the oak backsplash meeting the marble backsplash. Luckily, they are the same depth so the transition is smooth.

And here is the original backsplash, one long piece of solid oak notched at the sink. As the timestamp shows, we lived with this "less than optimal" solution for over 2 years.
