Bike CA Coast

Bike CA Coast (Berkeley to Santa Ana)

After graduating from Berkeley Casey rode from Berkeley to Tustin with a few others who lived at Cloyne. Keith and Kevin organized the trip, Ned’s girlfriend drove the truck so we didn’t have to carry anything, and Jeremy rode when he could but was sick for part of the trip.

The first day we rode from Berkeley to my parent’s house in Felton via Page Mill Road and Highway 9. It was the first 100 plus mile day for all of us. The next day we rode to Monterey and camped at a city park. Day 3 found us riding in Big Sur, my favorite day of all, and camping at Kirk Creek overlooking the Pacific Ocean. That night, around midnight, we piled in the truck and drove about 15 minutes north and paid $20 each to soak in the famous Esalen hot springs. We made it all the way to San Luis Obispo on day 4, the longest ride of the trip and stayed with Ned’s father and sister. On day 5 we rode to Santa Barbara via Lake Cachuma and stayed with my aunt. We struggled up the hills but were rewarded with a super long downhill going into town. We made it to Culver City on day 6 and stayed with some friends of Kevin and on day 7 we road up the driveway of Keith’s parents house in Tustin. The next day we went for a mountain bike ride.

I believe that this is the beach below the Kirk Creek Campground in Big Sur. I am up to my knees in the surf while Ned appears undecided about whether to go in or not.
