Life with PJ

Swing: 3 April 2008

PJ went on a swing for the first time today. Mom snapped the photo below with her phone.

PJ Turns 4 Months Old: 5 April 2008

For the first time in our monthly series of "PJ and the Bear" photos he smiled liked a mad man! Super handsome is he. Oh yes he is. Goo goo gah gah.

Alone with Daddy: 10 April 2008

Tomorrow, a Thursday, I will leave work early and arrive home around 3 pm. About 1/2 hour after I get home Em will go to Chez Panisse to work a night shift and will not be home until after 11 pm. This will be the first time I have been alone with PJ for such an extended period and, quite frankly, I'm scared out of my mind!

If all goes well he'll have just been fed and napping when I get home. I'll play with him when he gets up and probably take him for a walk. 6 pm will signal bath time followed by feeding then a good tight swaddling for bedtime. I don't pray, but really hope he goes to sleep without too much crying. Around the time Mom comes home she'll probably find me giving him his 11 pm meal.

Update!

Night with Daddy was successful. PJ fought his 'around 4 pm' nap (I let him cry for 1/2 hour in the crib), but after that we played until bath time at 6 pm. After the bath, while he was drying on the counter, I was warming his milk in a water bath on the stove and when I turned back to see him he had rolled from his back to his side and seemed very close to falling off the counter. Oops. Bad Daddy. After sucking down more than 6 ounces of mother's milk I swaddled him, put him in the crib and kept putting his binky in his mouth until he fell asleep. It took a while as he was super chatty but he didn't cry once. He slept until 11 pm when I fed him his second 6 ounce bottle, finishing just before Mommy came home.

Swim: 11 April 2008

Friday morning (in 36 hours) PJ and Mommy, along with Melissa and Isabella, are going swimming. This will be PJ's first time in a pool. Stay tuned for photos. Mom has already bought the swimming trunks and word has it he looks SUPER HANDSOME in them.

PJ shows off his new swimming trunks.

Happy 65th Birthday Grandpa: 28 April 2008

Happy birthday grandpa. I hope you like the photos Mom and Dad took of me. Love, PJ.

PJ Turns 5 Months Old: 5 May 2008

It didn't take the little guy long to break the double digit barrier and even less time, it seems, to double that.

17 May 2008: PJ Gnaws at a Banana

The weekend before Memorial Day we made a trip down to Felton to escape the oppressive heat in the Bay Area. PJ 'gummed' on a banana real good, in addition to getting in some quality naked time.

5 June 2008: PJ Turns 6-Months Old

Below are 3 photos of PJ and the bear taken on his 6-month birthday.

And below are three photos taken of PJ sleeping, at least until he woke up.

12 June 2008: PJ Wishes Uncle Will a Happy Birthday

Happy birthday Uncle Will.

23 June 2008: Teeth

Call the papers. PJ's first teeth broke through today. Specifically, his lower-front two teeth. Since he's pretty much the best little guy ever the whole 'teething' process has not really affected his disposition.

24 June 2008: Rough Night for Daddy

Em has gone back to work three days/week at Chez Panisse for the summer so Daddy is on patrol. Tonight was my first night alone with the little guy since April and he's changed so much I was once again apprehensive, and for good reason.

First off, right when I was about to put him in his bath I got 'bad tummy' and was forced to the toilet while he watched with amusement from the exer-saucer. After a pleasant bath we settled in bed for mommy's milk. He quickly downed about half of his 6-ounce allotment then seemed to lose interest so I picked him up for gentle burping at which point he vomited all over my shirt, regained his composure, then projectile vomited the remaining contents of his little (pretty big actually) tummy all over the bed, soaking through not just the duvet cover but into the comforter as well.

Poor little guy I thought. I'll deal with that after you've finished your remaining milk and are fast asleep. And that was what happened, he finished the remaining milk, and I once again picked him up for gentle burping and once again he projectile vomited all over my shirt and his. Aggggrrrhhhh!

Now frustrated, and mad at mommy for not telling the neighbor not to feed him before I got home, I stripped off both our shirts, wiped the vomit off of him, put him in a new shirt, and endeavored to put him to bed. He would have none of it and I left him in his crib crying while I stripped the bed, put the duvet and comforter in the washer, and then headed to the shower to the sounds of him crying. While soaping off and grumbling I realized I hadn't raised the side of the crib to its full height and that made me even more upset for being such a lousy Daddy.

Then it got quiet, and upon exiting the shower I found him fast asleep on him tummy. Total crying time was less than 10 minutes. I can handle this, after all, he's pretty much the best little guy ever.
