For this project I created a sgraffito tile which is a piece of clay that has been engraved. I started off by making a design on a piece of scratch paper which would mimic what carving the tile would be like. After that, I placed the design on the scratch paper over the clay tile and traced over the design. Then I scratched the glaze off of the tile to make the design that was on the paper.
I used a normal scratch tool for the majority of the process but there were some smaller areas on the tile that I used a needle tool to carve out.
I used shape as my element of art. The bird is formed out of repeating, elongated teardrop shapes that all look relatively similar.
I had few struggles while doing this. When I scratched off some of the glaze and clay I had to brush it off with a paintbrush or else it would smudge and make the black glaze look gray. Also, sometimes a piece of come off where it wasn't supposed to and then I had to reglaze that area.
But, overall I am pleased with this came out to look even though I had some struggles in the process of creating it.
