Relief Project

This project was more difficult than I first anticipated it would be. I created a portrait of my best friend because that was the first subject I thought of. First, I took an image of her and made a vector out of it. That was so later I could have a template to help me build the layers on her face. Once that was done I I cut out the outline and traced it onto a piece of cardboard so I would have a solid working surface. I then repeated the process on a piece of water color paper and then painted the areas on it that were darkest. I then cut out the darkest areas of the photograph and traced the new image onto another piece of watercolor paper. I continued to repeat that process until all the layers had been cut out and glued on. I tried to match the paint color on each layer as close as I could to the vectored image. Lastly I added a piece of paper shaped like a starburst on the end of the portrait. It is from a piece of sheet music that I cut using the Cricut cutter and it is there because she is a very musical person and I wanted to add something that represented her.

I used quite a few materials on this project. The base of the portrait is made out of cardboard and the layers are made from watercolor paper. They are secured together with hot glue and painted with acrylic paint. The starburst is regular printer paper.

In the beginning of this project I wasn't too sure how I was going to accomplish what I wanted to do. A lot of this was touch and go except for the starburst which I created at the very beginning. Overall, this project came out better than I expected and I am pleased to say that my best friend absolutely loved it.
