Observational Drawing: Still Life

For this assignment I had to draw an object from observation. I chose to draw one of the cactus plants that I have in my bedroom because I like looking at it. It has interesting shadows and I've never tried to draw a realistic cactus before. It was a little bit of a challenge which I'm not complaining about because I like to challenging myself with what I can draw. It still wasn't horrifically difficult but I rarely ever draw things from observation.

I used an HB pencil on this drawing and that's it. I didn't really need any other materials because this pencil was giving me decently dark shadows. I also don't like working with pencils because I don't know how to blend them or shade very well but this pencil didn't really need any blending.

There wasn't all that much of a process behind this drawing. It took me a little while to decide what to draw and which pencils to use but that's about it. Observational drawings are pretty simple because you're just drawing what you see in front of you. I like the way this drawing turned out. I was kind of concerned in the beginning because I couldn't get the shape of the pot right and the outline looked a little weird. But it all came together after I added the shading. I had a good time drawing my funny little cactus.
