Sustained Investigation #3

Raven

This assignment is the last in our sustained investigation series. My inquiry question is how can I use colored pencils and animal skulls to show the color in death. I made this drawing somewhat of an inverse of my last one. Instead of the skull having color and the background being black it is the other way around. I chose sunset colors for this one to make it contrast the last one. I kept the circle pattern the colors are in though to keep the two drawings as similar as I could make them. I wanted them to be nearly identical.

This drawing is also done almost entirely with colored pencils. Again, there is a small amount of pen, this time lining the border around the square.

Unlike my last drawing in this series, I went into this one with a solid vision and carried it out. In other words, I kew exactly what I was going to do and how I was going to do it. I like sunset colors in general but they were especially fitting for this project. Being about death there is nothing more fitting than a sunset as it symbolized the last moments of light a living being holds inside of them before they die. Also ravens, like crows, are used to show death. The colors are also the color of fire and can symbolize a soul going out in a last blaze like a fire giving one last flicker of a flame before being extinguished. Overall, I'd say this drawing fit my theme especially well.
