For these assignments we had to create interesting negative space drawings. To do this we drew some objects, such as leaves and stools, to make interesting shapes in the negative space. After we had done that we had to unify the spaces using color or patterns.
On both of these assignments I used watercolor paint. I decided to use that because it was the material that I liked the best and thought that I would get the best results from. Although, on the painting with the Dalmatian I used a pen to color in the dog's spots so it would be darker than the background. It was also so I could control the application of color better.
Elements that I used were be value and color. On the Dalmatian painting I gave the dog shadows and highlights to make it stand out from the background. On the leaf painting I chose the colors specifically so that it would look like fall.
On both of the paintings I used unity. The assignment was to unify the negative space so I used the same colors and patterns to make the spaces feel unified.
On the Dalmatian painting I also used pattern. I chose the pattern of dalmatian spots because it fit the theme.
I struggled a lot in the beginning with finding a pattern or patterns to unify the dalmatian painting. Eventually I came across a picture of a dalmatian and decided to do something with that. I was originally going to carry the black spots throughout the piece but after some guidance, decided to make the negative space inside of the stool part black with white spots to make it feel more balanced.
I didn't run into any problems with the leaf painting because I knew exactly what I was going to do with it before I even started it.
I am very pleased with the results of both of the paintings. There really isn't anything I wish I done differently or that I could change.
