Scratch Board

For this project I had to take an image of my choice and replicate it on scratchboard. That is where I take a piece of paper covered in a chalked-like ink with a very thin layer of plastic in between and scratch off the ink to reveal the white paper underneath.

After I chose my picture, I set it onto of my piece of scratchboard paper and outlined the dog and the lager details, such as the dog's spots. When I did this it made a faint indent in the scratchboard paper which I then lightly outlined with a pencil so I was better able to see it.

To do the actual scratching I used a needle for most of the drawing. I would a light layer of fur (that means it looked dark) and then went back over it to pull out the highlights. I continued to do that over the entire dog. I chose to leave the background because I wanted it to be better focused on the dog and because I don't think that I would have had time to do it.

Some elements I used are value and texture. I used value by creating highlights and shadows and I used texture by giving the dog the appearance of having fur.

There are a few places that I am not satisfied with in the drawing. I do not like the solid white area at the top of the dog's head. I wish that I had just scratched that area like I did with the rest of the drawing. I also noticed, when it was too late, that the fur on the dog's head doesn't part in the middle the way it is supposed to.

But there are still areas I like. I am pleased with the way that leg came out and the overall look of the head.
