For this assignment I had to create a photo-realistic drawing using charcoal and ink. I chose to do a photo of my dog Leo sitting on the dock at my camp. First, I printed out the photo in black and white. Then I drew a one inch grid across the photo. Then I drew the same grid, except tripled the size, on a different piece of gray toned paper. This was so I could get an accurate outline of the dog and placement of the objects around him. After I finished that, I used white and black charcoal to shade the drawing. For a finishing touch, and because I had to use it, I used some ink to draw in his black whiskers and details on the wood of the dock where it was in shadow.
On this drawing I used value. I had to choose a photo with the entire gray scale, from true black to pure white. This drawing has a lot of value because the dog has black, white, and every shade in between. So does the rest of the drawing.
I am very proud of this piece. I have drawn this same picture about four times before. This is, by far, the best I have done. I especially love the right eye on the dog because I feel like it looks very realistic.
There a only a few very small things that I would change. The muzzle on the dog is too flat at the end. I were to go back, I would round out his upper lips more so It looked more like his muzzle.
