Sgraffito Tile

This project was a sgraffito clay project. I got a slab of clay and to carve a design into the surface. I could change the shape of the slab and carve any design into it. First I had to make an imprint of my design in the clay and then I had to put the underglaze on it. Once that was done all I had to do was carve the parts that I wanted to be white out of the surface. I chose to carve a ram skull. I chose it because I really like skulls and the first idea that came to my head was to carve one. The ram appealed to me because of the shape. The rose of the right was just an extra project that I did because I had time.

The materials that were used for this were clay, black underglaze, and a variety of carving tools. I mostly stuck with one that was kind of spade shaped and had sharp edged. I also used a needle tool to carve out the outline.

I am very satisfied with the final result of this piece. I had one done sgraffito once before and I was worried that the design I chose was going to be too complicated. I was wrong. It was much easier than I thought it would be and I have no critiques for myself. The sand in the clay was annoying but it didn't impact the appearance of the final product.
