Artist Statement:
I focused on the fear of surgery for this piece. I chose to make the subjects predator and prey because of the fear shown from the prey and because I wanted to draw something with a bunch of limbs. In general, the spider is performing surgery on the fly, and the fly is awake and terrified. I really had fun designing the spider, although at first glance it doesn't really look like one.
I used alcohol marker and colored pencil for the characters, and I shredded chalk pastel and moved it around for the background. The fly is being tied down in the image so I decided to use sewing thread to represent a spider's web.
I started with a general sketch of the placements of the characters. I intentionally made the patient a bit larger in order to be able to show intestines and guts. I was choosing between a fox and rabbit, and a fly and spider. I chose the insects because it would make more sense for a spider to have many limbs than a fox. I also thought it might be easier to make a fly than a rabbit in this situation. I made the mistake of doing the background last, but I was able to erase any mistakes easily. For the thread, I took a needle and sewed it on.
