Artist Statement:
I focused on the fear of poison for this. The image is of a sea creature type of thing that has been poisoned with radium, and he is holding his jaw. I used inspiration from a blue ringed octopus because they are incredibly venomous. I want to point out that poison and venom are different. Poison is something you have to ingest to have an affect, and venom has to enter your bloodstream. That is why the character is affected by the poison, because it is not immune unlike if it were venom. Also, regardless of the venom and poison, radium produces radiation so it wouldn't matter anyway.
To make this I used drawing paper to make the character, and colored the whole in with yellow and blue. I used colored pencil to make shading and to add the blue rings. To make the background, I made a circle stamp out of an apple and stamped circles, and painted over them to make it more opaque.
I had a difficult time coming up with a material that I could use that connnected to poison. I was thinking cyanide but obviously no. I also considered using more snake skin because snakes are venomous, but I did not because poison and venom is different. Eventually I thought up of disney princesses and the poison apple snow white eats. I am still indifferent about that because it makes more sense to have it be a melatonin apple in the story, but I needed an idea and disney is magical.
