Artist Statement:
For this character, she is based off of philophobia, fear of love. The image is supposed to show a character with rather dull colors and general insecurities people have, as well as a long face to represent a swan which is the animal that symbolizes love. She is hiding from a group of butterflies, like how when people fall in love they feel butterflies in their stomach. The fear of love generally means someone is scared of being rejected and feeling more lonely before, which can be caused by outside effects like insecurity.
I used alcohol markers for the butterflies and the character. I used watercolor for the blue background and had my friends and family draw a heart and write their names next to it as my materials, and I had chalk pastels that I scraped and rubbed on the paper to make rain cloud shapes.
My original plan was to use a pre made character and just change the position they were in, but when I started I had the idea of making bold and visible insecurities that people can have, and using a swan because it is the general animal of love. I used scisors to cut out the butterflies after I colored them in, and tried to place them in a way where it was easy to see the hearts and names in the background.
