Artist's statement:

I started this piece with a prompt chosen by me, which was "draw a creature that growls like a lion, and slithers like a snake. I thought about drawing something with the head of a lion and the body of a snake, but I felt like that wouldn't be very creative. Instead I chose to draw a lion head but still incorporate snake like features, like the toung, fangs, and head shape. I also tried to include lion traits into the snake body, such as the fur, and diamond pattern. I named this picture Not a mouse because it reminded me of how both animals, cat and snake, tend to kill or eat rodents. I used an 11' by 12' sheet of mixed media paper with the pencils of 4H, 2H, B, 4B, 6B, and 8B, as well as a few different sized tortillons. I started this project on a smaller sheet of notebook paper, just doodling out different ideas of the body shape and size, designs, and head perspectives. I then chose a few of my favorite options and started to sketch them out. I ended up choosing the one you will see before you, and I turned it into a final project. I chose to make it all black and white because it's one of my favorite ways to color and shade in a drawing or picture. I also thought it would be a good way to start the year off by doing something easier and something that I enjoy.
