Midterm Art History Project

The Ennui Cure

Acrylic Paint on Canvas, Sculpey clay

14.5" x 12" x 13"

The idea in creating this was to choose two artists and make something that involves those two people. I chose Damien Hirst, and Vincent Van Gogh. I chose to create a "taxidermy" piece of Nessie to show Hirst, and painted a picture using the brush strokes of Van Gogh. This sculpture is meant to show how a Loch Ness monster might spend her free afternoon having fun.

To make this, I used assorted colors of acrylic paint on a canvas for the picture, and for Nessie I made a clay sculpture out of tin foil and clay, and used hot glue, cardboard, canvas, and a picture frame to piece everything together.

When I began this project I knew I wanted to do something involving Van Gogh and Hirst. My original plan was to find some sort of bird or sculpture at a consignment store and add to it. I was going to then paint a picture of a christmas murder scene that I call "Violent Night". I was unable to find an animal at the store so I decided to make one out of clay. I changed my painting idea to something more fluffy because I wanted to try and paint something different than normal. After both Nessie and the painting were completed I assembled everything using hot glue as a binding.Â
