Zebra
Linoleum block, sharpie, pencil, speed ball tool
The main idea that guided my artwork was from the sgraffito clay project where I made a shark. I then carried this idea over to this project by using the idea of making an animal. I liked the idea of making animals because it is something that I enjoy doing and drawing, plus I like animals.
My artwork was made by first sketching my idea onto paper, Then I used a 6b pencil and drew on the back of my sketch paper, which would help me transfer it onto the linoleum block. Next, I placed the paper on top of the linoleum block and traced my sketch onto the block with pencil. Once my idea was lightly sketched onto the block, I used a black sharpie to re-trace my idea to the linoleum block. I then used my speedball pencil to carve my idea onto the linoleum block so I could then make a print with it.
The process that I went through with my idea to my finished piece is I knew that I was going to take inspiration from my sgraffito project by doing an animal. But, I knew that I did not want to do a sea animal because I had done many of those in the past. I first thought of doing a giraffe because I thought that the spots would make for good contrast. Then, I kept thinking of other animals like lions, and elephants. I finalized my idea by doing a zebra. While I was sketching, I thought it would be a good idea to activate the edges by putting a triangle pattern.
