My experience in foundations of art has been really good. I really liked Foundations of Art because I liked that we got to do all sorts of projects with different materials and ideas. Some of my favorite projects were the linoleum prints and the gelli prints, as well as the sgraffito tiles. I liked these because they were something that I had never seen or done before. I learned and used new materials and the projects were really fun to make. I also liked that we were kind of taught a little bit about how to do the project or the basic idea. All of these things made the class very fun and interesting. Another thing that I liked about foundations of art is the bell ringers. I liked these because it helped me see how what we were doing in class connected to the world and we were able to see people doing it in real life sometimes for fun and sometimes for their jobs.
My work shows how I have improved because my work in the beginning of the year was very flat and didn't have much contrast of texture shown. Now my work shows more contrast texture and attention to detail. I think this is because throughout the year I have learned more and more about how to add shadows and shading techniques as well as different methods of adding and showing detail to make the image look more realistic/ how I envisioned the artwork to look.
The most challenging thing/ project about this class was the scratch board. This was hard because when I played with scratch board when I was little I either left the space fully black or scraped of all of the ink. When I was doing this project I had to learn how to use the different tools and use different pressures to make the picture more realistic. This was also hard because once you scratch away a line of the ink you cant put it back so I had to kind of think before I started scratching so that I didn't mess up. This was hard because it wasn't something I usually do in the process of doing my artwork.
The artwork that I am most proud of is my linoleum print. I am most proud of this artwork because it came out really cool, even better than I thought it would. I liked this because the steps that were in the process of making this artwork were really fun. I liked working with new materials that I had never used before. I had a lot of fun carving out the linoleum block to make the stamp. From there, I really like choosing the material that I would stamp the linoleum print onto. I also liked choosing the colors that I was going to use to make the artwork. I also liked following the linoleum prints up with Gelli prints. I liked this because it was just like the linoleum prints except with different prints and patterns coming onto the paper. I really liked the process of making both of these as well as the result.
One way that my artwork illustrates my strengths and weaknesses as a learner is it shows my strengths by showing that I stick to my original thought and follow it though in my artwork. One example of this is my wire sculpture was hard to make, it was hard getting it to stand up and hold up its wings using fish hook connections. However I finished it and it looks like what I was trying to make. One of my weaknesses as a learner is and as an artist is making realistic artwork. I see this in projects such as my self portrait and my scratch board. It is hard for me to add super realistic detail and copy something right from a picture. I do like to take inspiration from pictures and then add onto it. I see this in my artist inspired artwork.
