The friendly walrus
watercolor paper, crayon, watercolor
9x12
The main idea that guided my artwork is the little cluster of black ink dots in the middle of the paper reminded me of whiskers. At first, I was thinking of doing a dog but then I immediately thought of a walrus. I really liked making this artwork and I loved the process of making it. I first was just making the one larger walrus but there was one small black dot to the right side of the walrus so I thought I would turn it into a smaller baby walrus.
The specific materials that I used were brown, tan, black, and yellow crayons as well as blue watercolor. I chose the crayon because as I was looking at pictures of walrus I realized that their skin is kind of rough and textured. I immediately thought of crayons because I know that they create texture. For the background, I used blue watercolor. I used this because I know that they live in places where there are icebergs and water and of course sky. I thought that watercolor would do a good job at making a light color that could resemble their habitat.
The process that I went through while I was making this artwork is I first turned the paper around to try and get an idea of what I could make the ink into. I then thought that the little cluster of dots could be whiskers of a dog or something like that but then my brain just clicked and I thought of a walrus. I then stuck with that idea and started making it. I needed a little refresher of what walruses look like so I used google to get a refernce photo so that I see what they looked like. This helped me understand what materials I was going to use and the shapes I would be drawing.
