whales
12x6
watercolor, guache
The main idea that guided my artwork was I wanted to show the sperm whale and its ability to dive deep into the water. I also wanted to connect this to my inquiry for this work because I am slowly zooming in through my 3 paintings. I divided the paper up into sections to show the depths of the ocean and how it changes as you go deeper and deeper down, I did this by using different shades of blue. I wanted to show the whale cutting across all of the sections to show its habitat and ability to live in lots of depths.
The materials that I used was water color and white guache paint. I used these because my inquiry is using a main material of water color. I wanted to use water color because I like the way that it looks and how I can move it around when I am painting. I tried using guache this time because I wanted to try it out and also I wanted to try a white for the top section that had more pigment than water color white because I thought that the color distinction in each section was important. I liked how it layered on a how it looks in the end.
The process that I went through from my idea to my finished piece is first I was going to do a plain light blue background and then draw a fishing net wrapped around a bunch of different animals. Then I started to not like that idea as much for some reason so I started to try and think of a different idea. While I was thinking I thought of this new idea and I drew it out. I liked this idea so I started to make it. As I was making it I changed the lines and how it was divided a lot. And then I added a baby whale because I didn't want to other one to look alone. When I was making it I tried guache on the top section and I liked it. For this painting, it kind of evolved as I made it, I never really had a set idea and I liked that because I was always thinking about it.
