Hope you're all doing as best as can be, and continuing to isolate in your homes.
Per the district superintendent's announcement this morning at 9am, school will continue to be held remotely until May 1st. Excluding spring break, we have four weeks of instruction between now and then. For this week, your goal is to complete your machines and write-up. I'll provide some examples of machines and write-ups by Tuesday. I'll also host a zoom Q&A session from 2-3:00pm Tuesday 03/24. I'll post the Zoom code here and on Schoology tonight after I work out some kinks. If you can't attend from 2-3pm, the Zoom session will be recorded, and you'll be able to view it at your convenience.
Mr. A
Essential Question: How can energy be transferred?
GOALS: SWBAT...
1. build functional machines
2. describe how energy is transferred
3. Send Mr. Alexander an image of your design
WARM-UP 123
1. How many steps are there in your machine?

CLASSWORK
1. 120A: Design
By now, you should have ideas for the task of your machine, and the energy transfers your machine will use.
Your design should be drawn, either using a sketch program on your computer, or via hand-drawing.
Designs should include:
list of materials
dimensions
methods of attachment for each object
energy transfers between stages
labels for each material
each of the 6 simple machines
not sure how to incorporate something like a screw into your machine? Here's a link with suggestions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrtO446Pjok
Prior to getting building materials, you'll need to get your design checked by me.
My expectation is that you will finish your design, and begin building, today. If not by today, then by this weekend.
2. 124B: Work Time
Before you get materials, you must be done with Day 117 (all three assignments), and your design must be approved by me.
Getting more materials may be challenging. Before you cut something, make sure you've measured twice. Once you cut, it's over... ;-)
LEARNING AT HOME
1. Complete any portions of Day 117-123 which are unfinished. Those steps are your checklist to begin building.
2. Check Schoology. If you have missing quizzes, exams, notebook checks, or missing labs, complete those assignments and submit them. Stay busy, keep learning, and show me how much you know so I can accurately assess your grade.
3. Grades are due April 1st for our next progress report.
LEARNING AT HOME
1. Exam Thursday. Begin studying.
Topics: the six types of machines, the three types of levers, and the ways energy can transfer.
2. Test Revisions are now late: You can revise up to eight (8) questions, due Tuesday. You must state what the correct answer is, and explain in a sentence why your answer was incorrect, and/or why the correct answer is correct.
Period 1, I graded question #1 incorrectly for most folks. so if you got that one wrong, show it to me on Monday so I can check it for correct grading.
For all, #22 was graded incorrectly. The exam is now out of 38 instead of 39

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:
Want some? Our Rube Goldberg project is materials heavy, so, if you'd like to donate some common materials to class, I will reward your support with points.
Things which are larger, or more expensive (boxes, glue sticks, springs) will get more points per item than something small and cheap (one used Hot Wheels car, for example)
Here's what we need, as of Saturday (03/23/19). Keep in mind that this is a live list - I'll take things off the list if we have enough of that material. Also, if you think of something, and are wondering if it might be useful, just ask in class or via the Remind App:
Moving size (approx 18x12x12" or larger) boxes. Used in good condition is great.
soft springs
hot glue sticks (like these: https://www.amazon.com/Diameter-Compatible-Industrial-Adhesion-Quickly/dp/B07GTJ88KT/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=hot+glue+sticks&qid=1552582849&s=gateway&sr=8-7),
used matchbox size cars/trucks that roll well (they can be beat up cosmetically)
tubes (from toilet paper or paper towel)
gear sets and or motors (like these: LINK)
binder clips
CD's (used is fine)
screws (drywall is best - drywall screws have threads that go allllll the way to the head of the screw
small nails
masking tape (brown or blue)
