DAY 57

Goals: SWBAT...

1. Recognize that the vertical and horizontal motions of a projectile are independent.

2. Relate the height, time in the air, and initial vertical velocity of a projectile using its vertical motion, and then determine the range using the horizontal motion.

3. Calculate distance traveled, flight time, and max height using a variety of given data

WARM-UP & HW Check

1. Equation Review: If you haven't yet (It was HW) copy the range equation (here) into your Equation Chart

2. Take your keys, or an eraser, or something else soft, and gently toss it into the air. What is the vertical velocity at its maximum height?

3. Imagine you threw a baseball straight up. What is vx? What is vy at the maximum height?

4. An airplane is travelling 1001m above the ocean at 125km/hr is going to drop a box of supplies to shipwrecked victims below.

Write a list of given info for this problem:

Is there any given info that needs a unit change? Make that change...

CLASSWORK

1. A Range Equation Problem with Two Parts

    A. Why does Mr. P use the symbols v1i  and v2i? What does the 1 and 2 denote?

    B. Solve the problem along with Mr. P. The video is 7.4min long. You have 10 minutes to review, discuss, rewind, etc. :)

2. Solving Problems Using the Range Equation

    A. An arrow is shot at 30.0 degrees above the horizontal. The initial velocity is 49.0m/s. The target is the same height at the launch site. How far away is the target? Use GUESS and solve.

    Ans: 212m

    B. A pitched ball is hit by a batter at a 45* angle and just clears the outfield fence, 98m away. If the fence is the same height as the pitch (it's a short fence - don't judge), find the velocity of the ball when it left the bat. Ignore air resistance.

    Ans: 31m

3. Our Rescue Prob from the W/U

HW

1. Watch the video solution for problem #58 (pg 165), which is the problem we started in the warm-up

LINK

2. Write down the new free-fall equation in your equation chart.

3. Use the new skillz you have from today to solve pg 165 #59 & 60

4. Have a good weekend :-)
