DAY 21
Good morning students. Like the previous classes, anything written in bold font is to go in your notes for today, and to be uploaded to the Google Classroom via photo by the end of the period.
Have a productive day :-)
Mr. Alexander
WARM-UP:
a. Following a job interview, what should you do within 24-48 hours?
b. Imagine you work daily in a small team of two Nursing Assistants. One day, your co-worker calls in, and will be 1hr late to work. Should his patients be taken care of by you, or should you focus on your patients, and have his patients wait until he arrives? Explain in a sentence.
Who would be the one to make this decision?
c. If a patient overhears you saying, "You didn't say you needed it right away", what might they think about you?
What might they think about the hospital?
CLASSWORK (complete by end of period)
a. Title your notes for today: DAY 21: Work Ethics - Part 2
Overview of Today: LINK
b. Review your W/U:
a. Thank you note
b. TB pg 56, read the Teamwork and Time Management box
c. TB pg 56, read the section on "Your Attitude"
c. Pre-Assessment (10 minutes)
Go to TB pg 61-62 and, using only your current knowledge (don't use the internet, don't use your book, just your brain :)), answer questions 1-32
We will come back to revisit these later.
d. Reading & Questions
Today you'll read TB pg 54-61. While reading, you'll look at some of the more important aspects of work ethics via the activities and questions I've listed below. They are in order starting from pg 54
Does a nursing assistant preceptor have the authority to delegate tasks to you? why/why not?
ATTENDANCE: You will probably take the bus to work, or perhaps drive your own car. What would you do if there was an issue with bus service, and the next bus wasn't coming for an hour?
A. Will you wait, or find alternate transportation?
B. What would that alternate transportation be?
C. What might be the consequences for you if you showed up to work an hour late?
D. Let's say you know that you're going to be 2 hours late (your babysitter is sick, and grandma is busy until 10AM). It's currently 7AM, and you start your shift at 8:30AM. You work at a hospital, and it's open 24/7. When should you call in to report your impending tardiness?
Review the "Focus on Communication" box at the top of page 56 and edit your answer if necessary.
CONFIDENTIALITY:
A. Can you talk about patients outside of the nursing floor?
B. If you use the intercom system, what kinds of information should you say?
C. What should you NOT say?
PERSONAL MATTERS: Most of these are fairly obvious, but you'd be amazed with how frequently they occur....
A. Should you use the company's computers, fax, printers, for your own personal use? For example, say you're getting ready to clean out your house, would it be appropriate for you to make copies of advertisements for your upcoming garage sale?
Should you send or read text messages? Is one okay, but the other isn't? Explain in a sentence.
MANAGING STRESS:
The book lists ten ways to deal with stress. Which two stress relief methods do you do currently?
LOSING A JOB
Currently, your job is to be a student. Soon, you'll need to make the transition from student to worker, and behavior requirements will change drastically. It's not a bad thing, but it's important to begin considering now. With that said, I'd like you to consider your regular daily actions. For example, are you ever late to class? If you were regularly late to class, what are the repercussions? Would you get kicked out of class permanently?
Compare some of the reasons for losing a job with behaviors you see at school. What would each of these correspond with at school? I did the first one as an example:
A. falsifying a record - copying a homework assignment from a friend
B. poor attendance
C. harassment
D. using offensive speech and language
E. destroying the agency's property
F. invading a person's privacy
G. defamation
H. tending to personal matters while on duty
RESIGNING FROM A JOB:
If you need to quit your job, keep in mind that your next job may contact your employer to check your work history. With that in mind...
A. How much notice should you give when resigning?
B. Should you give notice verbally, in written form (letter), or both?
C. If you write a letter, what should you include?
A REAL SCENARIO:
On TB pg 61, read the scenario in the Ethics section regarding a CNA in Arizona.
A. Did the CNA deserve to be fired? Why/why not?
B. Would you have revoked the CNA's license? Why/Why not?
e. Review of the Pre-Assessment
f. Turn in a photo to the Google Classroom
Homework:
