DAY 01

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What is Physics?

Our first day goals are:

Students will:

1. Familiarize themselves with the class website,

2. Get to know their teacher via a "super exciting" presentation

3. Complete a survey

4. Understand how to do the homework

Warm Up

(8 minutes - write "Day 1" and today's date along with these questions on a sheet of paper in your binder or notebook, then answer them)

1.  As a student in this class, which materials do you think you should bring to class every day?

2. Looking at the agenda for today,  what do each of the five colors indicate?

3. What topics do you remember from your last physical science class? Create a list, and next to each item, rate your level of understanding with a score of 1-10. Here's an example:

A. Significant Digits, 7

B. Forces, 4

C. Momentum, 9

D. Projectile Motion in 1-D, 6

E. How to format a lab report, 9

4. What is Physics?

Write an answer in your notebook, and then on the whiteboard with your initials

Example: J.A.: Physics explains how electricity works

Classwork

1. Introduction: Slideshow (10min)

2. #001A: Familiarization (15min)

A)  In the margin to the left, find the link for Physics.  Look in the links below for the syllabus & agenda/classwork pages.  Familiarize yourself with this layout.  This website will be especially useful to you during class-time, and if you have an absence and need to make up assignments for that day.

B)  Go to the syllabus page for your class.  This is a summary of what to expect in your class.  It tells you what you will be learning, how you will be graded, and what materials you are responsible for bringing.

C)  #001B: Take the First Day Survey (link is ---> HERE).

3. Clean Up Time/HW (3min)

HOMEWORK

#001C: Complete the Why Study Physics activity as explained below. Due by next class session. 5pts

After reading the post (LINK) by Robert Frost, answer both questions on a sheet of paper. Be prepared to turn this in before class starts. Also, be ready to share your answer in class:

    i. What does the author mean by the following: "Understanding physics opens our eyes to the world around us and creates an epiphany in much the same way that learning to read does."

ii. Which of the other 31 answers (posted below Mr. Frost's) was interesting to you? Write the name of the author, then explain why you thought it was interesting in 2+ sentences.

iii. Which answer was the weakest? Write the name of the author, then support your choice in 2+ sentences.
