ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
In which ways can we answer the question, "How far?"
In which ways can we answer the question, "How fast?"
#Goals: SWBAT...
1. Properly set up multi-segment speed and velocity problems which involve distance and time
2. Convert units when necessary
3. Solve multi-segment speed and velocity problems with ease
WARM-UP (5min)
1. Use the diagram to determine the average speed and the average velocity of the skier during these three minutes.
Hint: For speed, you need distance and time. The skier goes 180m in the 1st minute, 140m in the 2nd minute, 100m in 3rd minute. What's the total distance? Add up the three individual distances, then divide by the time (3 min). Answer: (180m+140m+100m) / (3min)
For velocity, you need displacement and time. The displacement is just the distance from starting point (0 min) to ending point (3 min), or 140m. Answer: 140m/3min
2. As a last example, consider a football coach pacing back and forth along the sidelines. The diagram below shows several of coach's positions at various times. At each marked position, the coach makes a "U-turn" and moves in the opposite direction. In other words, the coach moves from position A to B to C to D. What is the coach's average speed and average velocity?
Answers: s = distance/t --> s = (35m + 20m + 40m) / 10min
v = displacement/t --> v = (-55m) / 10min
CLASSWORK
1. If necessary, review yesterday's problems. The answers are still on the board: #011A: (15min) Velocity Notes & Practice
- Take notes.
- Complete practice problems
- Presentation is available electronically here --> LINK
2. #011C: Practice problems
You will complete 1-10 (all) today in class in your notes, and get your work signed at the end of the period by your substitute.

Answers to 1-10 (you still need to use GUESS and show your work)
1. 25s --> 1sigfig --> 20s
2. 4cm/s --> 1sigfig --> 4cm/s
3. 60km/hr --> 1sigfig --> 60km/hr
4. 48.125mi/hr --> 1sigfig --> 50mi/hr
5. 50 mi/hr North
6. 308mi/hr --> 3sigfigs --> 308mi/hr
7. 0 (zero) if you consider the question is asking about a round trip, or 308mi/hr North if you think the question is asking about a 1-way trip only.
8. 0.005m/s --> 1sigfig --> 0.005m/s in the positive direction
9. 1610mi --> 1sigfig --> 2000mi
