DAY 109
Essential Question: What does thermal energy do?
GOALS: SWBAT...
1. understand the arrangement, motion, and energy of molecules in each phase
2. describe how molecules in a solid, liquid, and gas compare to each other
3. state how temp relates to the KE of molecules
WARM-UP 109 (4 min)
Last week there were multiple days with a beaker of boiling water on the hot plate on my desk
1. As the hot plate added thermal energy, what was the highest temperature the liquid water would achieve?
2. Once the liquid began boiling, would the temperature continue changing, or would it stop?
3. Instead of being used to raise the temperature, for what was the energy being used?
4. Open Lab 5 States of Matter on Schoology. Need access? Message me on Remind.
CLASSWORK
109A: States of Matter Simulation Lab (45min)
Lab 5 - States of Matter Simulation Lab. Finish page 1. Use "Insert -> drawing -> +new" and then the shapes tools to make your drawings
Complete 1-8

Essential Question: What is Heat?
GOALS: SWBAT...
1. define phase change
2. Define terms related to phase change
WARM-UP (3 min)
1. What does it mean for an object to "change phase"?
2. If you put a huge amount of ice (8 cups = 500mL) and 2 cups (125mL) of water in a big container, would the water ever freeze?
CLASSWORK
109A: Phase Change Vocabulary
Define "Phase" as it relates to chemistry (easiest to search " phase definition chemistry")
The phase of matter depends upon its _________ and the __________that is exerted upon it.
For the following terms, define them today, then leave six (6) lines of empty space below each of the a-part questions (3a, 4a, etc), and we'll fill in more info & discovery tomorrow
Define Evaporation:
3a. Evaporation is (heating/cooling) process
did you leave 6 lines of space? Define condensation:
4a. Condensation is a ______________ process.
Define boiling:
5a. Boiling, like evaporation, is a ____________ process.
Define freezing:
6a. Freezing is a ______________ process.
Define melting:
7a. Melting is a ______________ process.
Learning at Home/HW
1. Test revisions are now one day late. Question #1 was graded incorrectly, answer is D
2. Lab due electronically Wednesday - 11:59pm. Work on it at home or during nutrition/lunch
3. Complete 109A for HW
