WARM-UP

1. A patient with an acute illness needs to know where to go for help. 

    a. Should they go to an assisted living residence (ALR) or a hospital? 

    b. Should they get care from a licensed practical nurse (LPN), a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), or

        a registered nurse (RN)? With an acute illness, is the person expected to recover?

        b. Duties: give med, make a diagnosis, plan, treat the patient. delegate

    ii. Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

        a. Education: 2yr HS, 1-1.5yr certification program

        b. Duties: administer meds, plan, treat, delegate

    iii. Nursing Assistant

        a. Education: HS, certification 3mo

        b. Duties: no meds, treat, assist RN or LVN, physicals, bathe, bedpan. 

5. Notes: Nursing Care Patterns

    - if you work as a nurse, you will be part of the team. If you work as a doctor, you'll still need to be familiar with the pattern your HCA uses for its nurses.
