This one roughly follows Joy of Cooking but has been significantly modified in the style of corn and sweet potato chowder from Natalie's in Buffalo.
Grill 4 ears of corn, shuck 'em and cut the corn from the cob
Peel and dice one large sweet potato.
In a 6 qt pot, lightly crisp 1/4 turkey bacon in 2 T corn oil and remove it from the oil.
Sweat in the oil 3T each of onion and green pepper and 6T celery cut into a small dice.
Add the sweet potato, 2 C water, a small bay leaf, 1/2 t salt, and 1/4 t paprika and cook till soft at the boil.
Mash with a potato masher, and blend in 3 T Wondra dissolved in 1/2 c of milk.
Microwave 1 and 1/2 C milk 90 seconds till hot, add it with the corn and mash again.
Do not boil. Correct the seasoning with pinches of salt (may need quite a bit), sugar and cayenne.
Serve topped with with finely shredded parsley and fresh ground pepper.
This one is, as is Natalie's, really, really good. The green peeper could equally be swapped with red to give more color.
