artist statement
The subject is a self portrait of me that I took while not looking as I was drawing. Behind it are portraits of Eli that I drew while not looking at the paper. I turned them into flowers. I chose to create this specific work because I drew so many of Eli's faces that I thought I could make them into a flower garden. For materials, I used sharpie and crayola colored markers. I used the method of blind contour.
While creating this work, I paid close attention to making sure there was as little white space as possible by making the petals of my flowers big and making my hair look turquoise. I wanted my artwork to look abstract and I did that by making everything kind of messy (drawing with my eyes shut helped).
To add interest to my composition, I used many diiferent colors by roatting through markers I would use to color in each flower. However, I struggled with my drawing not looking realistic because I prefer drawing realistic drawings.
