Where is Jeju Island and why was the naval base protested?

Jeju Island is the largest island off the coast of the Korean Peninsula. It faces the East China Sea, making it an advantageous location for a naval base. The construction of the base was halted following concerns about the environmental impact of the base and the driving political forces behind its creation. Some saw the base as unnecessary for South Korean defense and a US-driven threat to China.
