Voices and images: Mayan Ixil women of Chajul
The woman is receiving a loan of 500 quetzales to invest in the purchase of thread so that she can weave huipiles and sell them. The women feel happy receiving their loans. The woman is a widow; she doesn’t have money to support herself and her daughters.
That’s why she works weaving huipiles with her two daughters. She plans to use the small loan being given to her to work and when she finishes her weavings, she will sell them so they can repay the loan and then work using her profit. Or, if she thinks it is necessary to take out another loan, then she will ask for it.
Another woman used her loan to buy floor looms in order to weave cortes. Other women and their husbands supported themselves by marketing baskets and used clothing. They bought what they needed with the loan that they took out, and then they began to work with what was left over. Once their loan was repaid, they continued working with the money that their work brought in.
