Chapter One: La Violencia and Its Effects
7. Return of the Communities of the Population in Resistance (CPR) from the Sierra
They are very sad because they have moved to another place, because they had to leave behind their belongings, their animals, and cultivated fields. They were anxious because they wanted to know if the place where they were going to relocate would be good enough and if they were going to find a place similar to the place they left. The elderly, children, pregnant women, and the sick were transported there by helicopter. The rest had to get there by walking for ten hours.
The Communities of the Population in Resistance (CPR) came from different villages in the mountains of the Sierra of Chajul. Because of the war being waged in the 1980s, the villages in our municipality endured many armed conflicts between the army and the guerrilla. The people of the villages were very afraid and they went into hiding in the mountains to save their lives. But once they reached the mountains they suffered a great deal because they didn’t have food, clothing, medicines, or houses.
