For today’s opener, you will be working with a partner (you choose!) to answer a set of questions using the map on page 369 of your textbook. You will not need to write the answers, but you are expected to discuss them and physically be able to defend your answers using the map.
1. With a partner, physically locate:
Ø China
Ø Mongolia
Ø Manchuria
Ø Korea
Ø Japan
2. The region you just identified is sometimes referred to as the Far East and had maintained very little contact with the West before the 1800s. Why do you think this was?
3. What main geographic features might be important to be aware of in China?
4. What foreign powers were involved in China in the late 1800s?
5. What geographic factors might explain why certain parts of China were under Japanese, Russian, and French influence?
6. Japan built up its navy as a step toward modernization. Why do you think having a strong navy mattered to Japan?
