Essential Questions for Unit 1:
What happens when people begin to question their government?
What is the difference between summary and analysis and when should you use each?
Objectives (students will):
Review the importance of reading the entire document for understanding
review annotation
review the importance of skimming documents for important details/facts
review the Enlightenment
Agenda:
Pass back 9th grade finals
WHAT we are doing: PART 1
Using 7 different sources and a piece of blank paper, you will construct a web diagram about the Enlightenment. Your web diagram should incorporate the following subtopics:
WHO
WHAT
WHEN
WHERE
WHY
HOW
First, Take a detailed look at your final from World History I (if you don’t have one, I have another you may look at). Using information from your final, begin to create your web diagram.
When time is called for the opener, you must summarize the Enlightenment by coming up with ONE WORD that best describes this important period in history.
Next, you will be placed in small groups. Within your groups, share your word choices and web diagrams. Take a few moments to add to your web diagram if needed based on what your group members shared.
In your groups you will rotate through 6 documents. All are documents I have used in the past to teach the Enlightenment (these documents are attached). Information may be repetitive and you do not need to complete any of these documents (in fact, they are masters so please don’t write on them). Instead you will need to review the information, discuss it as a group, and decide where it fits on your web diagram (perhaps you already have the ideas written down!).
While working in these groups, be sure everyone is on the same page. Ask questions of each other, especially clarifying questions. Be sure each person takes a turn explaining the information in their own way to ensure learning.
When you have finished with all documents, you should have fantastic and informative web diagram that provides details on the period known as the Enlightenment.
Then, you’ll use the backside of your web diagram to create an acrostic…..
Acrostic Instructions: An acrostic is a poem, word puzzle, or other composition in which certain letters in each line form a word or words.
Choose one of the following selections to make your acrostic with:
Enlightenment
Age of Reason
Illumination
Advancement
The words you create with your acrostic should address the following concepts:
- A summary of the Enlightenment .
- Predictions about what the Enlightenment might lead to (effects).
- Each word should also have a brief explanation of why you chose the word and how it relates to the Enlightenment.
- Each word should also be accompanied by a symbol representing your choice/explanation.
Enlightenment Review
This will be your first formative assessment (the first thing going in the gradebook) and will allow me to see how well you understand this significant time in history. It will also show me how well you can follow directions and read for comprehension. First impressions can be lasting, so be sure to show me your best work. Be creative, talk about your ideas, and use your time wisely! J
