Students will be given 2 1/2 weeks to answer TWO of the following questions (their choice). We will explore the Cold War era by looking at the conflict between the East and the West and the various "hot spots" of the Cold War.
Questions
The following critical thinking questions are designed to demonstrate your knowledge of the history we’ve covered in this unit and how it connects to the larger historical context of our studies. Your answers do not need to be long, just as accurate as possible. Use the space provided to show me what you have learned throughout this unit. Keep in mind the value of explaining your answers; SHOW me what you understand about the Cold War! J
DIRECTIONS: Choose 6 of the following questions to answer on the opposite side of this paper (you may use additional paper if you need it). Be sure to # your questions and start with a topic sentence (when appropriate) so I can quickly determine which question you are answering.
1. Why can’t communism and capitalism exist in the same world? Explain both economic philosophies.
2. How did the unsuccessful response to fascism in the 1920s and 1930s (appeasement and isolationism) contribute to the western response to communism in the 1940s and 1950s (ultimatums and iron curtain)?
3. Discuss how the M.A.I.N. causes of war we discussed prior to WWI might also apply to the Cold War. (Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism)
4. Compare the conversion to communism under Stalin in Russia and under Mao Zedong in China.
5. Explain the controversy behind the U.S. involvement in Vietnam. (Consider the foundations of our democracy as you discuss this controversy).
6. Discuss how and why third world countries played such a significant role in the Cold War.
7. Explain how the United States’ relationship with Cuba changed under Castro’s leadership. For what reasons might the U.S. react so harshly to Castro’s reforms?
8. How did conflict in the Middle East reflect the differences between western ideals and religious conservatism?
9. How does the Soviet involvement in Afghanistan compare with the American involvement in Vietnam?
10. Using examples, discuss the differences and motivations of the following Cold War policies:
