Saturday 25 September 1999:
The NC declares motion 99-25-B passed with 12 ayes, 3 not voting, and 1
empty position, and welcomes Ed Book to the Board mailing lists as the new
Board Secretary.
Several Board members join Tim in welcoming Ed to the lists.
Bad Day at Black Rock Corner: MI State Coordinator Joan Brausch has
resigned, effective October 15. On the same day that Joan tendered her
resignation, another 10 counties left the MIGenWeb for the American Local
History Network.
Make It So Corner: Mary Ann Hetrick has been declared the "unanimous
choice" of Colorado CCs and is the new SC for COGenWeb. According to the
Election Chair, "As each person eligible to vote had seven days in which
to submit a nomination and they chose not to, I herewith declare Mary Ann
Hetrick the unanimous choice of the Colorado County Coordinators and
declare her elected unanimously." [Nice trick, getting yourself declared
the unanimous choice of the electorate without actually having a vote.]
"I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: "O Lord make
my enemies ridiculous." And God granted it."

Changing Minds Corner: MIGW SC Joan Brausch, who resigned on Sunday, has
indicated she will consider staying on as SC, saying, "IF we could
work it so that the work gets spread out so no one person has to work
their tails off at the state site, IF we can reimagine the SC position
(within the guidelines of USGW and MIGW) then I will reconsider staying on
as SC." MIGW CC Jen Godwin is suggesting an amendment to the bylaws [MIGW
or USGW is not clear] that would prevent any one CC from taking on more
than three counties, and Maggie "Copyright" Zimmerman suggests also
adding wording to the effect that anything submitted to a county page by
anyone other than the CC should stay with the project when the CC leaves.

cannot trust the individual, the individual must trust the organization."

Write It Right Corner: Board member Terri Pettit posted a letter to the
State Coordinators yesterday noting that many people are writing with
"comments, complaints, questions, etc. to their individual Advisory Board
representatives asking for some official action, opinion, etc." but they
do not cc the entire Board. Terri notes that "it is usually impossible for
a rep to make any official response without first discussing the issue or
request with the rest of the Advisory Board members. Since we try to
follow standard email etiquette of not forwarding messages without the
permission of the sender, this introduces a significant delay in making
any response, where the Board member sends a message to the person who
contacted them, asking for permission to forward their email to the rest
of the Board, and waits for a reply." She notes that if people could
include the permission to forward their mail to the Board it could cut an
entire day off the response time. She asks the SCs to forward her message
to the state lists, and adds this postscript:
"It is our policy to keep specific details of complaints on the private
BOARD-EXEC-L, to protect the privacy and security of the project members
involved, while discussing general issues, policy guidelines, and
procedures on the archived list BOARD-L, searchable at
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl So if you want your
message forwarded to BOARD-L, be aware that we may bleep out names,
states, and other identifying details."

institution which rejects progress is the cemetery."
