Lawd have mercy!...its Your Daily Board Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Saturday 18 September 1999:

There is no Board-L traffic on this date.

Correction Corner: The NC has graciously reminded me that there are now 16

Board members other than himself, so the correct count of votes for

Motion 99-25 stood at 12 ayes, and 3 who have not voted [the Board is

short one member due to Bonnie McVicar-Briggs' resignation]. Mea culpa.

Get 'em While They're Hot Corner: Yesterday, the following ad appeared on

the Root$web classified ads "For Sale" board:

"Brain's shorts

FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY! Yes you, too, can own a pair of Brian "BRAIN"

Leverich's shorts, complete with skid marks. They will come to you in a

brown paper wrapping, no fear! For only $12.95 we will ship them straight

to your house. For taco night shorts, please add another $5.00 for those

special skid marks. We have 'em in stock folks! Don't delay, the calls

are coming in... Be sure to get a piece of the man who would own the

internet!"

The shorts were offered for sale by "Staff <help@rootsweb.com>", and they

must have sold like hotcakes [no pun intended]. The ad was removed late

last evening. [Could it be the Masked Avenger striking again, or just

underpaid RW staff members reduced to raiding the laundry hamper to pay

the rent? Stay tuned, there's sure to be more in this exciting saga!]

Sunday 19 September 1999:

There is no Board-L traffic on this date.

Tomorrow's News Today: Motion 99-25 is declared passed; Tim Stowell

nominates Ed Book as the Board Secretary. The motion has been made and

seconded and congratulations have already been issued [yes, before the

vote has occurred].

We're sure that Ed will make a fine, if verbose, Board Secretary. Why, it

almost appears as if the job was tailormade for him. And he's sure to

remain in the good graces of the Board _and_ RW, so we're sure he'll serve

for a very long time indeed.

Monday 20 September 1999:

Tim nominates Ed Book to be Board secretary. Ginger Hayes moves to accept

the nomination, saying "I would like to commend Tim on his choice. I don't

think he could have done better if he had tried." Joe Zsedeny agrees with

Ginger, saying "Ed is an excellent choice for secretary. Congratualtions,

[sic] Tim." Shari Handley also moves to accept Tim's nomination of Ed

Book but then indicates she will second Ginger's motion. Holly Fee-Timm

also approves Tim's choice.

Someone [Tina Vickery] _finally_ asks Tim to provide information about Ed

book and why he is a good choice for Board Secretary.

Tomorrow's News Today: Tim gives the Motion number 99-25B and opens the

floor for discussion; Tim tells the group why he chose Ed; other Board

members join in the Ed Book love-fest.

This Just In: We hear the vote has been opened on Motion 99-25B and the

votes are rolling in in favor of Ed Book. Congrats to Ed!

Tuesday 21 September 1999:

In response to Tim's call for discussion on Motion 99-25-B, various Board

members have the following to say about Ed Book:

"I've known of Ed Book for the past couple of years, although I have never

had any personal dealings with him. Based on what I know about him, I

think he would be a good choice." [Joy Fisher]

"Ed Book has long been known on USGENWEB-ALL as someone who provides

thoughtful, and in my opinion very objective, analyses of the Project

By-Laws. He seems well versed in Parliamentary Procedure." [Teri Pettit,

who also provides a list of Ed's posts to USGENWEB-ALL to support her

position]

"In considering you for the position, I've thought of your careful and

thoughtful analysis of the issues over the last couple of years. I

believe you to be fair and impartial while standing up for what you

believe in and therefore feel that you qualify for the position." [Tim

Stowell, from a letter to Ed Book asking him to consider the nomination,

posted in response to Tina Vickery's question]

"I approve of your choice of nominee, Ed Book, for the position of

Secretary." [Gloria Mayfield]

Tina thanks everyone for their input on Ed's qualifications.

Tomorrow's News Today: Tim calls for a vote on Motion 99-25-B and so far

12 have voted "aye".

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...its Your Daily Board

Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Wednesday 22 September 1999:

Tim Stowell calls for a vote on Motion 99-25-B; by the end of the day, 12

Board members had voted "aye" and three had not yet voted.

Terri Petit posts a message regarding the policy on CC grievances against

SCs. According to her, "Two CC's have separately sent email to their

Board reps lodging a formal grievance against their SC, alleging that the

SC has been publicly belittling some of the CC's on the state list

and causing discord within the state. One of the CC's has requested that

the SC "be removed from the USGenWeb Project". The other has simply asked

if there is "any way we can get some relief from this situation."" Terri

notes that it is Board policy to discuss grievances in executive session,

"protect the good name of anyone who might be unfairly accused, and to

protect "whistle blowers" from possible reprisals" but she also notes that

it Board policy "that all general discussion of issues, principles, and

USGenWeb By-Laws and procedures take place on the publicly searchable

BOARD-L, because all project members have a right to take place in the

formulation and implementation of USGenWeb policies and procedures." [eh,

she's a dreamer, isn't she? <g>] She goes over the bylaws regarding

removal of an SC and notes that she "would be reluctant to do anything so

potentially divisive as to initiate an Advisory Board vote under Article

XII Section 9 without first trying other more conciliatory ways of

resolving the situation, and if that fails, without first ascertaining

that dissatisfaction among the CC's of that state was widespread." She

asks her colleagues, "Does anyone have any idea as to (A) what procedures

we can use to arbitrate grievances short of using the "big stick", and (B)

how we might determine whether a grievance initially submitted by one or

a small number of CC's has the widespread support of other CC's in their

state?"

You Read It Here First Corner: The following announcement appeared in

yesterdays New Zoo Review: "RootsWeb now has New Zealand and Australian

state and territory resource pages online. Start your visit for

Australia". Yes, folks, there are now some of those lame "cluster" pages

for various countries and more in the works. Looks like its WorldGenWeb's

turn to be insulted and co-opted and Canada is next in line for the

cluster[f] treatment.

How Low Can You Go Corner: A little bird shares with us a report from the

Combs list, in which Root$web's latest apparent harassment of its former

big money donors is detailed. According to the message posted yesterday,

"It is no longer possible for anyone to post our Combs-Families URL

(http://www.combs-families.org/) to any Mailing lists listserved by

Rootsweb.com, Inc....on 1 Sep 1999, a full two months after our

ouster from Rootsweb, Rootsweb.com, Inc. took a second action against our

Group: They added our Combs URL to their SPAM Filter, which means that

any postings to any Mailing List at Rootsweb which begins with

http://www.combs-families.org/ automatically disappears into cyberspace

(the posting isn't returned to the sender, but the mailing listowner

receives a Combs-URL Spam Notice)."

The Combs Family association has to date been the only group [or person,

so far as we know] that has been successful in having its archives

[fully 20,000 posts] removed from Root$web and handed over to it. No

wonder RW is ticked at them, and how cute to see how childish they can be

over losing. What are they going to do next, hold their breath until they

turn blue?

No time like the present...its Your Daily Board Show!

Thursday 23 September 1999:

Shari Handley replies to Terri Petit's message of the previous day

concerning CC grievances. Shari notes that the bylaws do state that "that

the board cannot unilaterally vote to remove an SC from office - and that

is as it should be. It requires 2/3rd of the CCs in the state in

addition to 2/3rd of the board. What is not specified is *what order*

this needs to happen." She points out CCs may be afraid to initiate such

a vote for fear of reprisal, but that it might not be appropriate for the

Board to take action without first determining that it is the wish of most

of the CCs. She suggests having the CCs mail petitions to the Board or

having some sort of informal state-wide poll. Finally, she states,

"Removing a State Coordinator is a huge step, and should not be taken

lightly (I know it has not been in the case we are currently discussing).

If it needs to happen, it should be as a result of very strong evidence of

the desire of the state's CCs, careful consideration by the board, and

finally, a confirming formal vote of those CCs." [Hmmm...wonder if the SC

knows they are about to be fired?]

Catching A Shadow Corner: We hear that GenConnect is now considering

publicly posting the IP addresses of people who post to its boards, in an

effort to deter people who post off-topic or abusive posts [their recent

brouhaha is over someone who posts religious messages to the boards and

then posts abusive messages when the religious ones are removed]. Of

course, folks posting through anonymous proxies won't be affected by this

strategy, and folks who don't think what they are doing is wrong won't

care. Then you have the ones who don't know what IP address is...

The Lesser of Two Evils Corner: It appears that Holly Fee Timm will be

running opposed in the election for NY State Coordinator. My, she is busy

these days...eight counties in NY, OH, IN, AR, KY, and NC, co-cc in

several others, orphan page maintainer in one state, at-large Board rep,

and soon to be NY state coordinator. Where does she find the time?

comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and

controversy."
