Sunday 13 December 1998
The Election Committee Report for this week is posted: they are still
compiling state voter lists; the possitioin vacated by Debbie Wafford has
been added to the ballot; the call for nominations from the NW/P region
has gone out; current nominees are listed; they are discussion the
plurality vs. majority issue.
Motion 98-10 has passed: 11 ayes, 1 nay, 1 present [sorry, Archives]
Motion 98-12: is withdrawn
Motion 98-13: in full:
"I move that the board not involve ourselves with the continuation or
non-continuation of the USGENWEB-ALL-L list; I further move that the board
should not involve ourselves with the creation of a new list for the
USGenWeb Project."
[now where have we seen this before? Does this mean they will be
restoring mention of this list to the web page?]
It is seconded and the discussion period is opened until midnight
12/15/98.
The webmaster announces that there is a page on the main web site
describing the regional mail lists:
http://www.usgenweb.org/official/regionmail.html
One Board member notes that the SW/SC list is not apparently available
yet. [I noticed that too]
In other news: The moderator of this list, George Waller, has announced
he will be willing to stay on until the new NC is elected. [Yay!]
The Archives Project has a new project: the USGenWeb Archives Pensions
Project. A mailing list is available for it, possibly just for file
managers, and it pertains to all wars prior to 1900. For further
information, contact the Archives Project Coordinator.

Monday 14 December 1998:
Motion 98-12: A new motion is submitted:
"I move that we accept Holly Timm's resignation from
SE/Mid-Atlantic CC Rep, with regrets, and that we
add her position to the upcoming election for replacement."
It is seconded. The (not)NC sees no need for discussion, as the
resignation was irrevocable, and calls for a vote. 10 members vote 'aye',
1 votes 'present'.
In other news: The call for nominations to fill Holly's position has gone
out. Looking at the "Who's Who" list, it seems that Holly's position was
a 2 year one. Whoever goes for this one must be willing to be in it for
the long haul!
There are two new nominees for the SW/SC CC representative position: Bobby
Edwards and Megan Zurawicz [looks like the competition is heating up!].
Margot Hill is a nominee for the NW/P CC rep. The SW/MA position has not
yet been added to the webpage.
Our quote today was supplied by a reader. Thanks!

Tuesday 15 December 1998:
Motion 98-12: Resignation of Holly Timm has passed, with 11 ayes, 1
present, and one late "aye" vote that doesn't appear on the final vote
count as posted by the (not)NC.
Motion 98-14: New Representatives, in full:
"I would like to make a motion that we have Gary Martens fill the
NW/Plains and Betty Sellers fill the SE/MidAtlantic Representative-Interim
Positions until the Elections take place in January and Representatives
are elected to fill the vacancies."
Motion is made, seconded, and a motion is made to call the question and
that is seconded. Once again to expedite matters, the (not)NC allows dual
voting on each issue. At press time, there were 11 ayes and 1 present on
Motion 98-14, meaning it has passed. [Congrats to Betty and Gary!]
Tomorrow's news today!:
Motion 98-13--New List: this, as you recall, is the Board's pledge not to
involve themselves in the continuation [or not] of this list or in the
creation of a new list. The discussion period is over and the motion is on
the floor for a vote. At press time, there were 6 aye votes and 1
present.
In other news: The Board is releasing its own presumably daily report,
which has already been forwarded to this list. According to their report,
both motions 98-13 and 98-14 have passed. Additionally, they have
adjourned for the holidays and will be back in session on Jan 2 1999.
Bobby Edwards is the first nominee to post a campaign web page. It is at:
http://www.shreve.net/~bobbye/ccrep/ Bobby is running for SW/SC CC rep.

Wednesday 16 December 1998:
Motion 98-13 New list-- this motion has passed with 10 ayes, 1 present, 1
excused and one member did not vote by the time the count was posted.
Motion 98-14--New Representatives-- this motion has passed, with 10 aye
votes, 1 present, and two members who had not voted by the time the vote
count was posted.
The (not)NC states there are currently no motions on the floor.
[correct me if wrong, oh PPP gurus, but if they've 'adjourned' as
indicated in their report yesterday, isn't there supposed to be a motion
and a vote to that effect?]
In other news: I have learned that Betty Sellers will
not accept her appointment to SE/MA CC representative position.
Eric Segal, in response to a thinly veiled personal attack in another
candidate's campaign page, has withdrawn from the SW/SC representative
race.
A number of candidates have posted campaign web pages:
SW/SC rep:
Kathy Welch Heidel http://www.tri.net/~kheidel/genealogy/Campaign.html
Bobby Edwards http://www.shreve.net/~bobbye/ccrep/
Megan Zurawicz http://www.rootsweb.com/~mogreene/campaign.htm
SE/MA rep:
Shari Handley http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdsomers/se-ma-cc.htm
Over on the listowner's list, a wee controversy has erupted over GC/RW's
new board policies and USGW's 'free ride' on RW. From a field reporter:
"some interesting storm clouds...
RW/GC recently announced they were expanding the available GC boards, and
wanted to give the Rootsweb listowners a little advance notice. The boards
would be available for Rootsweb sponsors in good standing ($$), and it was
suggested that listowners may want to snatch up boards that complimented
their lists. It was also stated that it was first come, first serve, and
that duplicate boards would not be made, so one must act fast, or loose
the chance to control their corner of the genealogy world. Some USGenWeb
folks were less than pleased that they would now have to sponsor Rootsweb
in order to get a GC board to compliment their lists. The lists were free
to them, why not GC ? (I do not think this covers USGW folks who use
GC for queries, but not sure). This morning, a listowner who is not a
USGW person has loudly complained about USGW getting a free ride at
Rootsweb, when the sponsors of the co-op had to make up the difference."
"I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding
because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they
have not a single political argument left."

Thursday 15 December 1998:
Motion 98-15: Motion to adjourn, in full:
I move that this session of the USGenWeb National Advisory Board
be adjourned until January 2, 1999. The Board members will be
available to take care of any necessary business during this time.
The motions is made and seconded, and the chair calls for an immediate
vote. At press time, there are 12 ayes and one present, although no final
vote count is posted. [a full day after they said they'd adjourned, they
get around to actually making the motion, seconding it, and holding a
vote. what would they _do_ without the DBS to remind them of these
things?]
Gary Martens, interim rep for the NW/P region is welcomed to Board-L just
in time for it to adjourn. He makes his first vote on Motion 98-15. A
number of Board members post welcoming statements, these among them:
"Welcome aboard, Gary.
Hope you have laid in your supply of
coffee and antacid ! (Ant-acid so we can
kill the annoying bugs...) "
(Kim Harris Myers, Dec 17 1998)
"Trey, who is traveling I believe, and I welcome you. Be careful we are
surrounded by indians." (bob Bamford, Dec 17, 1998)
[Without invoking either death-wishes _or_ ethnic slurs, The Daily Board
Show would also like to welcome Gary to the fray. We promise to make it
interesting.]
"Cautious, careful people, always casting about to preserve their
reputation and social standing, never can bring about reform. Those who
are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the
world's estimation, and publicly and privately, in season and out, avow
their sympathy with despised and persecuted ideas and their advocates, and
bear the consequences."

Motion 98-15 Adjourn--One more Board member votes aye. The (not)NC posts
the "final" [four members had not yet voted but sufficient votes were
received to call it passed] vote count: 9 ayes, and one present. He
wishes the Board a safe and happy holiday and says he'll issue a roll call
at 6 am CST Jan 2 1999.
Saturday 19 December 1998:
The Advisory Board posts its "daily" update [which seems to have skipped
two days], posting the results of voting on Motion 98-15.
One more Board member votes aye on Motion 98-15
In other news:
All the Paladium ad banners have disappeared from Rootsweb and have been
replaced by graphics linking to other RW pages. Did they lose their
sponsor?
Since the Board is on vacation, the Daily Board Show will also go on
hiatus until they reconvene. We'll still be here to bring you any
developing news. Be Merry!!
