Stealing bread from the mouth of decadence...its Your Daily Board Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Friday 6 August 1999:

There is no Board-L traffic on this date.

Saturday 7 August 1999:

The Election Committee Chair announces "We would like to announce the New

Archives Representative. We have been informed that it is now official,

Joe Zsedeny is the New Board Member from the Archives Project."

The EC Chair also posts a second notice regarding the run-off election for

NC, "This is a second notice to make sure that everyone has been informed

of the new voting system. Hopefully this new system will make it easier

for you as well as easier for the Election Committee. The URL for the

page that will accept you vote is http://vote.rootsweb.com/usgw-nc.html .

Remember as with the old email system, you can vote as many times as you

want, but only your last ballot will count." [this was sent to several

project lists]. Project members are invited to send questions and comments

to elections@usgenweb.org.

Spread Thin Corner: Megan Zurawicz, who in the tradition of Root$web

staff has adopted a silly sig line [she now signs herself "RootsWeb

Community Mentor and general dogsbody"] posts quidelines for suggesting

new "communities" for Root$web's new non-genealogy areas. Anyone,

apparently, may suggest a new community, but requests are not

automatically granted, since RW may not feel they're "ready to go that

direction". She notes that 1) "Lists will have commercial taglines", and

2) "Associated webpage space for the list will be available (also free),

but any official page for the list has to stay at RootsWeb, and will be

bannered." In response to concerns voiced by listowners, non-genealogy

list managers will have their own listowners' list, and adopting a

non-genealogical community list/page will not count against your

sponsorship quota [nor does it require that you be a sponsor].

"The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill

the world with fools."

Pikachu!...its Your Daily Board Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Tuesday 10 August 1999:

There is no Board-L traffic on this date.

Election Update: The runoff election between Fred Smoot and Tim Stowell

for National Coordinator runs through August 18. This is the date

originally announced by the Election Committee. Please note that the

incorrect date of August 23 has been changed on the ballot page at:

http://vote.rootsweb.com/usgw-nc.html. Please vote!

Publicity Hounds Corner: We hear from a little bird that Forbes magazine

is going to do a story on internet genealogy and its going to be written

by A USGenWeb CC! Unfortunately, this CC is apparently going to use the

article to focus on Root$Web, rather than USGenWeb. [*sigh*]

Will Wonders Never Cease Corner: In this week's Root$web Review [which

expends a considerable amount of ink encouraging readers to subscribe to

Ancestry.com], Root$web announces state cluster boards and mailing lists.

These are geneally more of the same "no-brainer autopilot" boards we have

seen with the surname and county cluster boards. Interestingly enough, if

you click on the GenConnect boards, they take you to "unknown county"

boards.

Feeling Creative? Corner: Also in the New Zoo Review this week is a

reminder announcement of RW's banner contest [otherwise known as the "get

graphics work done for free by users" contest]. It runs through Aug 31.

But it sounds like a fun idea, and we are bored right now, so we herewith

announce the "DBS Banners You Won't See on RootsWeb" contest. There's no

prize, but we'll post what you send [unless we don't like it <g>]. If you

have a good slogan, and no graphics skills, you can submit those as well,

and we'll see if we can't get one of our stable of underpaid graphics

artists to whip something up for you. To get you started you can view some

already submitted banners on these fine webpages:

http://www.radix.net/~merope/rfiles.htm

http://www.radix.net/~merope/rfiles2.htm

http://www.radix.net/~merope/rw4.htm

[there's no deadline, no prize, and you get to keep the rights to what you

submit <g>]

The Natives Are Restless Corner: With the Board apparently on extended

vacation and the dog days of summer descending over the project, some

readers have decided to liven up the DBS a bit. The following items are

submitted by Guest Correspondents for your amusement [partially edited for

clarity and space]:

Washing Your Mouth With Soap Corner: A reader tells us that during the

course of doing some family history research on Root$web mailing lists,

she came across a number of posts containing quite a large amount of

profanity and abusive language. Curious, she "decided to see what

would happen if I used the search engine on RW's main page to search

for the f* word. I got 29 hits and even more when I went for the word,

s**t." Perturbed at both the tone and the content of the posts, she

forwarded this information to one of the major producers of blocking

software. She is pleased to report back to us that the software company

has informed her that they have contacted the RW helpdesk and have

requested that any emails containing foul language and/or belligerent tone

be removed from the archives.

Fun With Statistics Corner: A reader writes that an interesting phenomenon

is occurring with some RW lists. To take an example: "A Listowner

commented this week on Rootsweb's Listowner List: "I have noticed all my

lists I have and am subbed to are very slow ..." A RW staffer responded:

"It's August. In the United States, and much of Europe, half the

population is off on vacation somewhere." However, a search of the

Listowners List Archives indicates otherwise: In the first 7 days of Aug

1998, 186 messages were posted to the Listowners List whereas in the

first 7 days of Aug 1999, only 81 messages were posted. The Listowners

List was changed to "moderated" on 30 Jul 1998 per posting that

date by Listowner Vicki Lindsay. Did scores of Listowners fail to take

vacations last August?"

The reader also notes that "It appears that this phenomenom is not

restricted to the Listowners List. In Jul 1999, only 190 messages were

posted to the USGenWeb-All List whereas in Jul 1998, postings totalled a

whopping 1,148." [Well, we all know why that is. Since early 1999 that

list has been moderated by Linda "The Censor" Lewis, and the only free

speech permitted there is hers.]

"A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need

for illusion is deep."

Dear Readers,

I've received the following message from Fred Smoot, candidate for

In the interests of equal time and fairness, I have asked Tim Stowell to
