No Board-L traffic on this [and none on Monday so far]

Tit For Tat Corner: The Talbot county Ga Archives saga creeps along.. In

the latest developments, current Talbot CC Keith Giddeon has admitted to

unsubbing both Carol Johnson and Lea Dowd from the GATALBOT-L mailing

list because they "don't want GAGW Talbot users to beneift from [their]

files." He's also finally agreed to stop linking to their files, although

instead of just linking to their home page as they have requested, he will

no longer link to their site at all. In his message to them, he notes "I

want to cut all ties with you. I have made this known to members of the

USGW AB, Linda Lewis, David Morgan, and Virginia. I will NOT have links to

ANY archives files on my Talbot page. I will keep one link to the Talbot

Archives Main Page, but that's it. At this point, so much has been said

back and forth, I do not know who transcribed any of the files in

question."

Tim Stowell and Linda Lewis have both washed their hands of anything

having to do with the mailing list, whether it be arbitrary unsubs or

reposting of copyrighted material.

As requested. Carol has sent Linda a list of URLs to files that are hers

and that are posted in the Talbot county Archives. Linda's response to

this was to ask her if she was the author of the book most of the

information came from or if she compiled the information from various

sources. Carol and Lea's response to this is to point out out yet again

that "The ACTUAL files residing in the Archives are NOT the original

records that Henderson wrote in her NON-COPYRIGHTED book.. They are

Carol's transcription of those records. Virginia took Carol's HTM files,

converted them to text and submitted them. Hence, they are Carol's

transcriptions of these original records... word for word, dot for dot.

What part of this don't you understand? ... the Marriage records contain

items NOT found in Public Domain for the records cited. They are a

compilation from other sources as well...While Public Domain cannot be

copyrighted, the format used can be. I believe everyone knows that

Marriage Records are NOT in alphabetical order at the Court Houses."

Linda has now asked Carol and Lea not to send her "accusations or

innuendos" on the subject anymore, as she is "going to look into the

specifics and determine what if anything should be removed from the

Archives." In the meantime, the files will remain online, and apparently

Linda can expect to be hearing from a lawyer in short order.

[On a side note, Linda also informed Carol and Lea that since they have

apparently "invited the inputs and comments" of the DBS, this "cheapens"

their argument in her opinion. We are mystified as to how the validity of

their claims is affected one way or the other by publication. Either

the files are Carol's or they are not. The only effect we can see is that

it will now be impossible for Linda or the Board to shove this little

embarassment under the rug with the others.]

Incidentally, for those of you have joined us in the middle of this tale,

it is webbed at: http://www.radix.net/~merope/history/chapter74a.htm As

a special bonus, we've also posted Pauline Leitner's similar story:

http://www.radix.net/~merope/history/chapter74b.htm

Scrapping in the Schoolyard Corner: Speaking of little embarassments, our

own Man Who Would Be King is apparently behaving like a two year old

again. Tim Stowell, who is the GAGenWeb SC and thus head honcho of the

state mailing list, is the subject of a two-month old grievance filed by

Ron Eason, who is one of his CCs in GAGW. It seems that after Tim

illegally delinked the USGenWeb Census Project back in April 2000, he put

Ron on a "monitored" status specifically to prevent him from posting

anything about the CP to GA state list. Ron is apparently the only list

member treated this way and apparently his treatment relates solely to his

association with the CP and is not based on any other conduct. So now a

situation exists wherein material that may be of benefit to GA CCs and

visitors is kept from them just because Timmy doesn't like the place the

material is stored or the person who is announcing it. Given that anyone

else can post pretty much anything they want to the list so long as it

concerns GA genealogy, Ron filed a grievance in September over the

discriminatory treatment he is experiencing. The Board, which is probably

sufferering from an extreme case of grievance overload these days, has

apparently not yet addressed this issue.

Today's quote was sent in by a reader:

"Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men

who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without

thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its

waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or

it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle! Power

concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. Find

out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact

amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these

will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with

both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom

they oppress."
