There is no Board-L traffic on this date.

[the secret list, though, is busy, busy, busy...]

Honesty Isn't The Best Policy Corner: It appears that our intrepid NC has

been slapped down hard by the Board for his openness with the members of

the Tombstone Project. In a message forwarded to me by An Interested

Observer [but with no headers or other identifying attributes, like what

list it came from], the NC states that, "it appears that some sort of

apology has been demanded and is expected by some members of the Board."

He then proceeds to apologize to those Board members "who were not

discussing solving the differences between Census I and Census II before

having a full membership on the Board" for paint them with the same broad

brush, and to listmembers who either directly or indirectly received his

previous messages for clogging up their mailboxes "with unauthorized

communication". [!] He states finally, "As PR person for the Project it

has been my position that when asked questions I would answer them as I

did to the Tombstone and Archives volunteers. I guess that I need the

approval of some before doing so."

As one who is herself villified on a continuous basis for telling the

USGW project what's going on with their elected officials, my support and

thanks go to our NC. Its refreshing to _finally_ have an NC who thinks its

right to be upfront with the project volunteers. And its really a shame

that he has to apologize for doing the job he was elected to do.

Bits 'n Pieces Corner: We hear from a number of sources, some more

reliable than others, that a serious effort is afoot to get Linda "Over My

Dead Body" Lewis fired as national coordinator of the Archives project.

We also hear from a number of sources that Rootsweb spiders, on a nightly

basis, the servers of USGW projects members who remove their pages from

RW. Now why would they want to do that?

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

Live from New York!...its a Daily Board Show Special Report!

*warning* made from fresh, wholesome editorial content. Read at your own

risk!

Sunday 4 April 1999:

Silence Means Security Corner: As you know, the Board-L list has been

strangely quiet the last few days. Last night I was contacted by A

Mysterious Stranger who tells me that in fact the list has been active the

last few days and says the Board has actively been discussing a new

motion. Here's the status of this motion as I received it. [Please note

that this is second-hand info and I cannot verify it at this time by

viewing the original posts.]

On March 31 a motion was made that states the Board will make no decisions

on the census issue until replacement Board members are appointed. The

motion was seconded and given the number 99-8 by the NC. There was no

further discussion. The motion was then amended to included particular

candidates for each vacant rep position: Joe for Archives and Linda for

Tombstone. This amendment was also seconded and subsequent discussion

focused on whether this was too much for one motion. It was amended

further to drop Joe and to reactivate the tabled Motion 99-7 to handle

Joe's appointment once Motion 99-8 had been voted on. Then the Board

broke for the Easter weekend.

[Why this isn't appearing the in archives, I don't know. Perhaps RW is

once again a day late and a dollar short?]

Mea Culpa Corner: I've been privately contacted by a number of our

elected representatives who wish to remain anonymous. They would like me

to clarify information previously reported in the DBS that "the Board" is

discussing the Census I/II issue without its full complement of members.

In fact, the discussion and the suggestion that the census issue is too

important to wait for appointments to be made is occuring only among a

"small but vocal minority" of the Board members and there are several

Board members who do not support this course of action. Unfortunately, I

can't tell you who they are, since apparently their colleagues would make

their lives miserable for talking to me. But, in the absence of Archives

and Tombstone reps, they are acting to defend the rights and interests of

the members of those projects, and I apologize to anyone who feels they

were erroneously assumed to be acting otherwise.

Mea Culpa, the Sequel Corner: It appears that Ancestry Inc. feels their

actions in approaching USGW volunteers for their data have been

misrepresented by the DBS. Someone who has been in contact with Ancestry

says that an Ancestry representative contacted the State Archives

for the land records in question, and the state archivist referred

the request to Linda Lewis [who rejected it]. Thus, in Ancestry's

opinion, "As we contacted the state archives, which is entirely within our

rights legally and ethically, the situation has been totally

misrepresented."

As I originally reported, "Apparently, some project members, including a

Board member, have been contacted by Ancestry with a proposal to make some

records available in the USGW Archives "available to researchers online".

This is essentially correct, since the state archivist in question is a

USGW project volunteer and Linda Lewis [who Ancestry did contact

personally to press their case, or so I am told] is a Board member.

However, while I cannot speak to the ethics of Ancestry's request, I do

apologize for any confusion caused by my original report.

Onwards and Upwards Corner: The DBS will be temporarily suspended until

RW gets its archives fixed and updated. I'll keep you posted as to

developments as I am able and will resume regularly scheduled broadcasts

as soon as possible.

"It is wise to disclose what cannot be concealed."
